in seattle its 40-45F at night... its cold. specially since i ride a motorcycle. my graphics card hits 92C X 2 cores and it makes my room very very hot

Ah I see, I didn't read what you wrote carefully enough.

Putting an intake fan in your window will help a lot with the room temp.

    Thanks for the help.
74c is plenty cool in my opinion. What card are you running?

Ummm... I was ready to jump on this if MW@H on video cards produced WCG/ Boinc points/Pie. I've been following the thread, the links and unless this is some version of Latin English that I don't understand because I cut my 8th grade Latin classes, MM is right. This thread doesn't belong here.

If it does, someone please translate how running MW@H on my video cards will get me WCG Boinc points.

Pretty please with sugar on top. MM is sniffing for pie crumbs that aren't there. And I'm sniffing right behind him. A disturbing visual... I know. I don't want to picture that either.

An HD 4850 on my laptop. I'm really curious how much 50MHz effects performance in graphics cards.

M@H is in no mans land your right. We have an offical team on BOINC just no offical thread here at XS's.

Its bounced between GPUGRID and WCG and with the new and old crunchers coming in on WCG it so happens those of us with ATI cards want to put them to use.

I say the more the merrier So if its not too much of a bother let us keep bouncing between threads or maybe make a section for us

Who knows maybe we catch a meteor headed for earth before it gets here with our ATI's and save all of humanity

Thats really good temps for a laptop
How much performance difference it makes would be ~10% difference

and melt it with the combined heat of a thousand GPUs?

In all fairness, I'd join a project looking for exactly that if my GPU could run it.

    Hey Folks,
I pieced together a rig tonight just so I could run MW@H....

    It's actually no slouch:
    PHII X4 965
    Gigabyte 890GX UD3H
    ATI 4870
    4Gb Mushkin DDR3 1600 c7
    Ubuntu 10.10
I installed Boinc from Applications (I'm a total noob when it comes to linux BTW), and then installed MW@H from the Tools/Add project Manager, and set prefs from the website...

    It's running WCG right now...
For some reason it still won't run MW@H...

I thought maybe I was doing something totally wrong when it came to ATI VC crunching,
so I installed "Collatz Conjecture" on my main rig the same way, and it's CRANKING out the points (sweet temps BTW (54c max))...

I did a little research and I'm not sure how important some obscure math problem is (collatz), But I probably just don't understand the importance of it...

Any of you Ubuntu Guru's have any clue as to why MW@H isn't crunching on the new rig?

BTW: slaveondope, I agree with you man...
MW@H is a worthy cause and deserves it's own sticky in the DC thread!

Funny enough, Now that it's getting cooler outside I have started crunching more and was just looking for the MW@H thread here a few days ago and found nothing. I stumbled across this thread looking for details on how to underclock my 4850x2 as it was crashing in Crysis. We really do need an official thread for MW@H

If I remember correctly there is only around 35 or so active members crunching MW@H for XS currently that make up over 10% of the teams total RAC.

Clearly you guys need your own forum!!!! As a noob I jumped to the conclusion that these pie points = wcg boinc points and it's apples and oranges. No disrespect to your chosen project. I have less than 2 weeks here and am still figuring out what's what.

ya a subforum would be cool beans for sure. considering it takes no CPU power to run (unlike f@h on ATI cards) and it's managed by bionc it made sense for me to turn it on in systems running WCG using ATI cards. might as well make use of them. and I like anything having to do with space so maybe this will help make life more like Mass Effect haha

All I know is that the cards need to be double precision capable, which mine isn't (8600GT).

well considering a 6870 can't run it do to the lack of double precision i would have my doubts about the 4650 and 4670 having it. looks like mostly the high end cards of each generation. im doing it all with a downclocked 4850 and an overclocked 5870, nothing else

I believe any ATI card that is a HD3800 or above will work for MW@H as they have the double precision FPs so a 46xx should work fine.

the problem is each generation its defined differently. the 38xx is double precision. the 48xx is 128bit accuracy. the 58xx is double accuracy.

the 4850 is specified as being "128bit accurate floating point"

the 4650 and 4670 also list being "128bit accurate" but because this detail changes from family to family im confused.

    EDIT:
3800: 128-bit floating point precision for all operations

4850: 128-bit floating point precision for all operations
46xx: 128-bit floating point precision for all operations

5830: 128-bit floating point HDR rendering
6870: 128-bit floating point HDR rendering

Double-precision is also a lot slower and more expensive to implement, though still far cheaper than an equal number of CPU's for the FLOPs. Anyways, what's confirmed good (and wide production)...
    HD3850
    3870
    3870X2
    4850
    4870
    4890
    4850X2
    4870X2
    5850
    5870
    5970
The HD69**'s are unknowns, as are some regional & OEM variations (like 3830, 4690, & 4830). In general, only a generation's top-end variation will be have double-precision FP.

The HD69**'s are unknowns, as are some regional & OEM variations (like 3830, 4690, & 4830). In general, only a generation's top-end variation will be have double-precision FP.
I see 4770 is long forgotten. This little low-power beast with 920/920 is somewhere between 4850 and 4870, consuming ~33% less power. And it's pcie x8 friendly, so it looks like a per/Watt winner! (I've had 2 of them, worked like a charm)
