For my personal comfort levels that's WAY too hot. If I ever get into GPU crunching I'll also be getting into water cooling.

    Hey Folks,

I just tried to set up MW@home on my Boinc profile...
I'm no expert yet, but I'm pretty sure I did everything right.

I set the perfs as noted (no CPU etc) but whenever I turn MW@H on it steals 3 cores from my CPU that should be used for WCG tasks
and my GPU temps don't increase...

I'm getting the feeling that MW@H doesn't recognize the 6870 series cards yet.

    Can anyone confirm/deny this?
Or am I just doing something wrong...

Hey Dave havent heard anything about the 6series cards yet. If its eating up your WCG cut that sucker off.
M@H is just an added bonus to me personally.

    Thanks Slave,

Yeah... I turned it off for now, but I'm a true geek, SETI and this project really interest me.

I'll try and figure it out on my own...
My VC has nice aftermarket cooling so I don't think temps would be a problem.

I'm bored anyway, I'll check for new driver patches etc.

MW@H needs a double precision card and the 6800's are only single precision. Collatz Conjecture may be the only 6800 friendly project?

    WOW... Really?

That kind of shocks me, because thats the error message I keep getting from Boinc: "An ATI GPU supporting double precision math is required"

I found a new Hotfix for the 6870 drivers (E) and updated, but it still doesn't want to work....

Actually, I'm really happy with the 6870 for gaming/benching it's a great bang for the buck card!
I'd refuse to pull it from the main rig because of this...

Guess I'll have to put a crunching rig together using my old 4850.
Do you know if it supports double?

    Thanks..... Dave

the 4850 sure does, im using one I added my 5870 for a bit tonight as well, about one WU every 1 min 10sec. the 4850 alone turned out like 60k in half a day. totally crazy.

oh and Movieman, I would be more then happy to post else were but I can't seem to find the MW@H subforum and considering the thread is here...

And some serious money, those WB aren't cheap

I could probably add my 5850 to my loop without seeing any real impact on cpu temps but I can't justify the cost of the wb.

edit: I decided to try this anyway to see if my temps would be reasonable, but none of the WU's run

Make sure you have gpu on while in use in BOINC manager other wise it will only run when its been idle for X minutes as seen below it.

How can i control the GPU usage? i want milkway to use no more then 75% of my GPU, i set that in preferences but it doesnt take affect anywhere. i also said that i dont want Milkyway using my CPU yet its still using 25% of it

you cant set % for GPU.. it either uses it or it doesnt. If its a multicore GPU, you could make it only use 1 core perhaps..

As far as it using your cpu.. it does use like 5% of cpu no matter what.. if you made a change on the milkyway website ( and no tlocal ), make sure you force an update to pull the new config.

    @ masterg

I looked back over my settings and Im afraid to say its all or nothing when it comes to gpu % usage.
As for your 25% cpu usage by M@H check the first page I posted the preferences you should use to minimize CPU usage for M@H
I suspect you may have changed your CPU usage to 75%, not GPU and have a setting for M@H somewhere that is allowing for it to use your CPU.
You should only get ~2%-5% max CPU usage from M@H when setup as Ive shown.

Is there a way to automatically control the GPU runnings then? cause i have a 4850x2 2GB. its a friggin beast MW@H will use both GPU cores on it, but it reach ~91C on each core doing so and this has caused BSODs in the past

You have any voltage control What are you using to change clocks also?

Back to what you asked earlier too, I dont believe you can control how many gpu cores to use. Ive tried suspending just on of mine but t will just jump that task and start another.

EDIT I see pics now MSI AfterBurner it lets me go more than 100mhz under stock if I like.

I have Rivatuner and ATI Catalyst Control 10.10 both of them list my GPU as being at the lowest clock settings of 625MHZ and im not able to select lower and i dont like touching voltages

You may need to change UnofficalOverClocking value 0 to 1 I believe in the .cfg file.
Also be sure to check sync similar cards in settings as seen in pic.

it wont let me change the .cfg file. it keeps saying "Access Denied" when i try to save the changes. i love the fact that these jobs only last 8 seconds on my beast
