*** Baked a GPU back to life ***

Ok so here's the deal, I gave an old 8800gts 320mb GPU to one of my buddies and he enjoyed it for awhile untill he
started getting verticle red lines on the screen, and then ultimatly it stopped working all together

So I said to him no prob I have a lifetime warranty on it, I'll just send it in for RMA. Wrong!!! It's a BFG, and BFG is
    defunct now.

He says screw it, lets build me a whole new rig, so we did (i7, gtx460, yada yada), and he gave me his old rig, in
which case I now have my old and dead 8800gts back.

I tested it out and sure enough soon as the PC started to post It had vertical red lines, and other random chars
all over, and It hard locked.

I then thought I would hate to ditch this once $300 card in the trash, and I had seen some post on the web
about baking a gtx280, and so i decided I have nothing to loose.

    The process Is:
    1). strip the card down
    2). preheat oven to 385 F
3). Bake for 10 mins (I have the card on some standoffs so it does not touch the baking sheet)
4). let cool for 30 mins
5). reapply the TIM, and replace fan/heatsink.
    6). reinstall the card.
7). power up & cross fingers.

To my suprise it worked!!!!!!!!!! It has now been running error free for about 4 hours. I've ran many test,
    and it's absoluty rock solid....

Manny people did this with the m8600gt from the laptop Type compal FL90. it all worked for them and it worked up to 3 months straight. after that you had to bake it again lolol.

I have the same laptop but did not had to bake it yet

I have a laptop that basically suffers from the same disorder, i.e. BGA balls separating from the board, I think I might try the oven reflow trick on it soon.

Amazing! So 385F are like 195 Celsius? How much time you preheat the oven till you place the card?

Great trick and thanks a lot for sharing!

The oven was preheated until it reached 385F, then I placed the card in.

I did see that one, however It did not make sense to me that the core side should be facing down while the reflow was occurring.

I've seen a post awhile back where someone tried this on their 280 (core facing down), and the core fell off.

I did that too with my current 8800GTS 512MB. 195°C for 8 minutes et voilą! Like just bought!

But don't try @ 250°C, I did with a 8800GTX and I got wafers everywhere (and the core too fell off!)!

One very interesting side effect (could just be coincidental) this card would always run very hot >100c, now It never get's passed 81c!

I admit it could be from the new TIM, and a remount, however ~20c drop is substantial, also the card is noticeably cooler to the touch now, and it does not heat up the case like it did before.

Did that to an MSI 5770 Hawk... I wanted to dry it after ln2 session, but temp control in the oven was broken and it went to full blast. Everything fell off the card except the gpu and memory chips. Luckily I had a hi-res image of the pcb and I managed to solder it all back together and revive the card

I would always remount my old Air cooled Cards.
The tim application/mount is sub par usually.

Though usually the heatspreader that sits on the GPU is soldered on as well.
You reflowed both the pins and the Soldered Heatspreader.

    Better temps all around.

I always remount everything, this card was remounted years before it died. It always loaded > 100c that is until it died and then I baked it now it runs like ~20c lower.
