How does this setup look for everyone on air.

I am new to the i7 setups now. Just got her to 4.2 on air. What I think to be decent temps.

Any feedback of suggestions, should I see if I can go higher?

If you are doing this 24/7, back it down.

IMO a safe temp should be below 65.

I like to keep the temp on my i7 below 70C but there are some here who let them run in the 80's if I remember correctly.

If you want to be Xtreme crank it to 4.5
4.2ghz looks good for the weeks challenge, but I think you will find 4ghz on lower volts better in the long term as far as power draw and temps

mine has been running at 4.0GHz and gets up to 65-69C under water... but my vcore has to be at 1.4125 to be stable. been running like this for about a year, no problems YET... I7 920.

That temp is a bit too high for 24/7.
What kind of cooler do you have? Suggestion, you can get a Thermalright Silver Arrow, it's a reall good cooler, efficient and quiet.

    I've been running a X5650 6C/12T @4.1GHz 1.31v since yesterday, and it's keeping around 61'C. Your i7 should do almost the same, I think.

I don't like to run at over 65C for 24/7 work.
Iwould first try dropping the vdimm to 1.6
    Then the VTT to 1.3
Last try slowly dropping the vcore and doan hour with each change to see the effect of the changes.
Now that said leave it as is until next Monday night!
Stick a 20" window fan blowing into the open case for now..

12" Vortex fan on it right now and ambient room temps are 48 Deg f. temps are now in the low 60's at full load. Will stay this way until Monday :-D

then I will take all suggestions into effect.

Under 80C in LinX is fine. For WCG I'd say best keep it under 70C.

I have a Xigmatek Dark Knight-S1283V on it right now. I'll play around with the settings after this weekend. With the windows open I'm down in the low 60's right now.

If you want to play by cheap, ditch it, get the Scythe Mugen with an extra fan. I have it and love it to death.

If you don't like too much hassle, get the Thermaltake Frio, it comes pre-installed with two fans rated at 100+ CFM.

IN real winter time put your pcs outside of window to have nice -20 wind blowing on your pc

I like to keep mine in the low 70's max, for 24/7 crunching.

I've heard of it plenty of times, but normally it's at the extreme end of things when some dimwit powers up a system with no cooling at all to "check the BIOS settings".

I've done "heatsink only" (discluding TIM) quite a few times when I'm ing around with settings but not overclocking. Temperatures rise 10-15C at stock but that's it; it's bearable and saves TIM(e). But yeah--even tossing a stock HSF without TIM on a CPU is usually enough to cool it at stock. Lapping CPU & HSF would obviously be beneficial but not entirely necessary.

Once something semi-permanent is ready, I apply TIM, overclock, and will put a load to the system. Otherwise, I do my best to keep workloads light.

rational human being:"So what kind of heat sink, fan and TIM are you running?"
    nitwit:"wut? wut is teh h33t s1nk? Ma b0x3n is teh l33t PASSIVE it doesn't NEED fans!!!1!11!"

When I got home from work My system had crashed and restarted, I had previously taken BOINC out of my startup :-/ Lost 8 hours of crunching.

I have since dropped my vcore to 1.325. VTT to 1.295 DRAM V to 1.6 and BCLK down to 174 x24. 4.81ghz running stable and running at 63 across the board at ambient room temp of 68 F. I will still play with dropping the vcore down slowly. After Monday of course. I feel comfortable with these temps and long as things stay stable.

THANK YOU ALLLLLLL for the help! BTW I was able to add 3 more e8400's today don't know how much they will help for our push but they are here to stay!

    4.81GHz, 4.18Ghz

For long term sub 70c is considered safe, Zalbard's advise is good. Even though it seems like we should push everything we can get out of a CPU that extra 100mhz really is not worth it sometimes vs being 100% stable.

Yeah. I had to drop my Wolfdale from 3.8GHz to 3.7GHz for that exact reason; losing 2.6% was better than having stability problems.

Just noticed as my rig switched over a few minutes ago from crunching only HCC to all HCMD my temp's dropped 5c across all cores.
