These cards are either more powerful than we think or AMD will not have their answer ready till the end of the year.
Otherwise it doesn't make sense. It was the GTX 280 launch, when people got upset by sudden price drop mere weeks after, right? They would have to be insane, to try that again.
I suppose they will keep a premium pricing, since:
A. This is high end, where price dosent follow performance in the same way as mainstream.
B. The part will have limited availability just as e.g. 5800 FX Ultra.
C. Low availability and premium pricing go together till they can evaluate 6900 series.
End result? I guess its worth waiting first for AMD 6900 series and Nvidia price moves. Early suckers, excuse me enthusiasts will have to bite the bullet.![]()

Repost, and we don't really need 1 million threads about the same damn card.
Would be nice with good competition in the highend as well like we've now seen between GTX 460 and Barts. Somehow I think $599 is accurate for GTX 580 and Cayman XT will end up at $499 being only about 5% behind in performance and the prices will probably stagnate for a while, GTX 580 dropping $50 at best and both nvidia and amd/ati will be happy to milk cash out of people as long as possible.

LOL and I thought I was being slightly optimistic with a ~15% or so perf advantage above GTX 480 for HD 6970.
But yea at least this should just give AMD free hands to at least price Cayman up to $499 for single gpu and way beyond $599 for the dual-gpu version if it's good enough which it most likely is.

$600 really?
It better be one killer card.

If I can't get a good price for my 480s, I'm going to skip these cards and wait for the next generation. Paying a further 1,200 USD for 2 of these cards after spending slightly over a 1,000 USD on the 480s doesn't sound very appetizing to me.
The best time to buy these cards will be after Cayman becomes available, as Nvidia will be forced to reduce the price due to competition.

It's simple, they are pricing against the 5970 and playing wait and see with Cayman. Most likely both Cayman and 580 will settle at 499 to 459$ and god knows how much antilles will cost.

honestly, if those are true, nvidia is really in trouble if caymen is priced at $400
That's a fake price, I bet.
Because last years "peace"-period is over, and with that the era of 600$ card is over too.

Well enthusiast market isn't very price sensitive, or all that important in terms of market share and profit so it's easy for Nvidia to price this card sky high especially before it has any competition. I'm sure there will be enough foo...enthusiasts to buy the first batch that Nvidia has scraped together. If the paper launch proves true there won't be more until next year. Of course this sucks if Cayman ends up as fast as people think since AMD can overprice it too.
