I'm guessing/ hoping the 990x results we're seeing so far are just the right chips in the right hands. They are still B1, so I don't see how there can be anything special going on, other than the improvements in the most recent batches

It will be interesting to see these puppies in real action.
I'm afraid Intel is repeating the old trick. First made everybody to buy a "cheap" SB, and then releases an "expensive" monster that nobody can resist.
Hey guys, lets see if they can do 5GHz+ on air.

open box 980x are now less than 800.

i've seen them go for 650SHIPPED even.

1.1k for a 990X and a open box probably goes fr 900 shipped or so.

not a bad price for chips now. SB needs to get fixed and get some new chips out already

u know 32nm isnt anywhere near as durable with voltage as the 45nm and 65nm were.

I hope those are for quick benches.

My understanding is raising the BCLK (bus speed) raises the speed of the entire system (cores, imc, memory, etc). If what you want to do is bandwidth limited you want to do a BCLK overclock. This does put more "strain" on all of the computers subsystems. If however, if you use you computer for applications that are not bandwidth limited then raising the multiplier is fine. With triple channel memory, the x58 platform has pretty good bandwidth without overclocking the rest of the CPU. I believe a good example of a non-bandwidth limited program is Folding@home or WCG (world computing grid). The don't move really large blocks of data but do a lot of fp (floating point) type of calculations. I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong.

To aid the discussion, could you explain more what you plan to do with your computer (the types of applications you plan to run).

All this is moot on a EE cpu which has everything unlocked from ram multi to QPI multi.

I asked a few of the guys at GooC what the best is, and they said go Multi OCing.
You get better latency from what i heard, and if u need faster ram speed, just up the multi on the ram.

The higher Bclk u have, the higher VTT u need, and u really dont want to push a lot of VTT on these guys.

Batch# 3045A752. Seems pretty much the same as my 980 except it requires lower voltage below 4600 Mhz. Just mounted it so the paste hasn't settled yet. Air cooling.
