Yes that is completely correct. As former a 4870x2 owner and a current 5970 owner. cayman should look like this: 6970>5970

With how badly my 5970 smoked 2x285GTXs at launch in both minimum and maximum fps I'm hoping the 6990 can do the same to 2x580 (should be a 485GTX). Even though I still like the GTX580 but the price could be lower.

When looking at Cayman it's position slightly behind the 5970. The chart shouldn't be a means to determine performance however, they got the placement of Barts performance correct.

Definitely, even with the changes both are not a "new generation"... and who started with this? AMD. So.. Well... let's not mention that because AMD is not also free of guilty...

Well it is a refresh, so it might just on par with it. All really ATI needs to do is add more ram, increase the gpu clock speed, and add better tessellation performance and they are good to go. All and all ATI has less work to do than Nvidia did so cayman should be back on top.

Depends on the game, but I don't think it's correct to say that the 5870 is faster than the 4870X2... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/174?vs=162

    Eastcoasthandle said 5870, not 5970.

Surprising that your 5970 'smoked' SLI 285GTXs as benchmarks have them pretty close, overall I'd say the 5970 is faster but not by much: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/167?vs=165

I guess it depends on what games you play.

Er, if the 5870's replacement ends up being faster than two of them, yeah, it's a new generation. The naming was a terrible idea, but if their high end monolithic dwarfs the previous gen's dual card flagship ...

Intel's atom is a terrible chip.

Yes I know he said 5870 and I expanded on what he he said to include the 5970.

If past cards from ATI are anything to go one. it should be like this: 6990>6970>5970.

As for your link. Are you talking about 2650x1600 like I am? That is the only res that matters to me. See my sig.

People are still harping on about names?

Lets face it, AMD couldn't keep the 5k series because they were releasing too many cards. Nvidia couldn't keep the 400 series because AMD released a new family.

The only time they don't bother is if both sides are only intending to release one card, or if one side poses so little threat, it doesn't matter what they call their crap.

Regardless, OEM's will always push for 'new gear' even if there's no new gear on offer so they can sell to the masses. AMD, Intel and Nvidia have to have new SKU's every year. It's not a matter of parts deserving a new family number, it's if the company making them has a choice to hold back a number to impress the pre-build buyers.

Even the biggest renaming 'scandal' falls into this pattern, Nvidia's 9000 family was up against AMD's HD3000 family. Which a lot of you noticed wasn't much faster than the HD2000 chips, but they did have DX10.1.

You'll just have to accept this, just like the Americans had to accept the Mustang got fat and ugly in the 70's.

I got you two 'h' names mixed up, since my post was clearly a better answer to the original argument

He said smoked in minimum and maximum, Anandtech gave average, which doesn't really exclude his statement

If its been mentioned sorry but they put tork type"star" screws in all but the four core screws,no more phillips(us) or cross(int.) screws. That sucks i have to go to lowes now...to get the small torks.

*size is star t6 use t7 if you start to strip it
Ita good idea for more grip on a small screw like that

Seeing more reviews the cards operating temp seems to be like anyother big single nvidia card.

No. It's nowhere near the 88°C - 92° which many GTX 480 / GTX 470 cards ran at.

However, the actual TDP / heat output of the chip itself is nearly identical to that of the GTX 480.
