NVIDIA Prefaces AMD's Radeon HD 6800 Launch with Price Drops

On the GTX 460 side of things, the cost of the 1GB models will now match the 768MB models, while the GTX 470 will drop down closer to the HD 6870's rumored price.

To put it in perspective, you should be able to play any DirectX 11 game at 1920 x 1080 (full-HD) resolution with medium-to-high level of detail. Currently, NVIDIA holds the upper hand in this segment with its GTX 460-768 MB and GTX 460-1 GB, which is exactly what Radeon HD 6850 and Radeon HD 6870 seem to be after, with the HD 6870 also holding the potential to disturb higher-end SKUs that are currently priced around the $299 mark.

The drops on the GTX 470 will turn it into what will likely be a very well received enthusiast "sweetspot" card. The 460 looks like it will likely not fare so well on the "value meter" after Friday morning though and just how far it will fall from greatness will certainly be balanced out with how low its price goes. Bottom Line: The GTX 460 1GB and 470 are going to be getting cheap this week.

It already happened in the UK, I ordered my GTX 470 at £221, later that same day it dropped to £199.

Ah, how have I missed the price wars. I got my GTX 275 over a year ago for 130€, and they still can't beat it in price/performance. Sure some new stuff is there too to increase value, but ultimately it's the performance that matters the most.

    I'm hoping we'll get 480-class performance for 300€ soon.

Yes, finally something. The 475, 6950 and 6970 in November should be entertaining.

    6870 x 470 = $249
    6850 x 460 = $199

Sad to hear, cheapest 470 I found is being sold for £189 but I'm sure will be cheaper.

Hip hip horrayy, this is rather unexpected by me (GTX 460 got slashed in price is somewhat justified, but using 530 mm^2 chip to fight toe to toe against a 255 mm^2 one ? gotta give the credit where it's due, nice effort nVidia).

With this, HD 68xx launch & MSRP prices won't hold so strong & very long, i always expect ATi cards to be priced slightly cheaper than their nVidia's counterparts considering their market share position & nVidia's strong consumer perception/brand value. With AMD's strong flexibility in their cost structure regarding NI generation cards, i don't think AMD will shy away from some heated price war (up to some point).

and if the price cut comes, then the 6800 series got to have a 8800gt price level as those prices will be adjusted the coming days.

And this will affect the 58xx in what way? Just curious, will they lower their price too or just eol-vaporize the series?

Likely, margins will be lower as long as the 5800 series exist.

A price war is always good news.
I was hoping nVidia would do "something" to end the last years "peace" and push the prices down in this round.
This move means nVidia is serious about fighting back, and hopefully they will release a refresh or new GPU too, soon.

Yep, matching a card with 255 mm^2 chip, 256 bit buswidth PCB & 151 w TDP VRM design, using only 1 GB GDDR5, with a card that uses 530 mm^2 chip, 320 bit buswidth PCB & 215 w TDP VRM design, 1.28 GB GDDR5, that requires some sort of mortal & bloody sacrifices from the green team. ....

With no new SKU for this segment in sight, NVIDIA's immediate reaction is reportedly that of introducing "fairly big" price-cuts on the GeForce GTX 460 duo, the company also plans to cut prices of the high-end GeForce GTX 470. To what extant exactly these price cuts would go is not known, but they will be put into effect either today, or tomorrow. Meanwhile, sources close to AMD told us that in response to this development, the red-team will fine-tune the final pricing of the Radeon HD 6800 series, to step up pressure on the competition. We expect as much as $20 to be cut on the currently expected prices of the Radeon HD 6800 series pair.
Yeah, Nvidia is out for blood... its own if its using the GTX 470 to fight Barts XT, which is half its size

Who cares if nVida or AMD bleed, or what's their cost/size? I hope they both can bleed, as long as we can get better prices.

This price war is a welcome news for use frequent consumers of GPU. It will hopefully push forward better and cheaper high-end cards from both camps soon, too.

    Yep

A few have been trying to discuses yield, size, transistors, cost to speculate that nVidia can't cut prices. But when they reality slaps in their face, and a good price-cut shows up, they get really confused what GPU-discussion should really be about.

Only shareholders and those on the pay-list av these companies care about those kind of BS. We, the real frequent consumers av GPUs, like to see the end of "peace" which can push down the prices down, not matter what it costs to AMD or nVidia

My god, the passive aggressive is overwhelming. Nvidia is probably going to bleed money to keep marketshare, that's the end of the story.

I for one am amused about how precipitously the GTX470 has dropped in price.
