Is my memory holding me back??

i have a 512mb stick of Crucial PC 2100 DDR and was wondering if that is what's keeping me from upping my FSB on my Epox 8k7a+ with a XP 2100 TB Processor. i can usually get up 155-ish just messin around with aircooling on a cold day, i know my temps aren't holding me back becuase i my CPU never exceeds 21 C to 23 C when i do this, and it boots up fine, i just crashes or restarts when im running 3dmark03. I know the memory is old, but at the time it was really good, and i also got a deal on it, but it's not worth using if that is what's holding me back.

Hmmm, lets see - old MB, PC2100, possibly a good CPU (is that a TBred B?). If your CPU is a "B" then it can go quite far, but both your RAM and your MB are holding you back. With a good MB and RAM your are looking at 200 X 10 - 11.5

The ram will probably do more than that (should do 166 on slack timings)

The board is quite close to the limit at 155... you may get more by cooling the chipset.

Its hard to say if your CPU is the limitation or not... try more Vcore and see if you can clock higher. If not then its probably the board.

i've slowly been starting to realize that my "once kick a$$ mb" is getting pretty old and out dated. it's just im doubtfull that my mb is what's holding me back, it has gotten awards



for being the best O.C. board back in its day, i guess back in its day 155 was up there, i duno, i havnt been at this for too many years.

P.S. my CPU is the t-bred B.

yep, its a bit old hat now.

Get an NF7 in there and you hsould get upto 166 or more (my crucial 2100 did over 170 with 3v even at tight timings)

on a NF7, is that as high as it goes(170) or was just ur crucial holding you back, cuz if it gets up there even more, i know i could get in the 180-200 FSB speeds with better memorey if the NF7 could do it. what's ur highest with an NF7 MB and what prcessor and cooling did you have.

That was on 8kha+with crucial 2100 at cas 2.. 170 was about the memorys limit.

My NF7 with winbond Bh5 is doing 235+ fastest timings.
My crucial 2100 was damaged by running it at over 3.2v for 6 months... so I never tried it on NF7.

joe my NF7 does does 245x9.5, with memory set to 5-2-2-2 and 3.3V

this is without the watercooling on it too

Me too tried the 8K7A+ (AMD761) at the time it was a 'hot product'. Back at the time I bought it, VIA only had the KT266(non-A), which was crap. These two were the only DDR chipset at those days. Them Vcore's available on the 8K7A+ was what fooled me into it. Never got far with it though, was holding me back at around 155 too if I remember correctly. As soon as KT266A hit the market, I got the KR7A by Abit, which was one of the best boards I ever had.

Makes me almost feel sorry for that potential winner TBred-B you got there. It deserves a better board I'd say Anyway, back in those days 155MHz FSB was not considered very high, as I did 166+ in SDR times already using an IWill KK266 (VIA KT133A). The Epox 8K7A+ actually dissapointed me. It's follow-up, the 8KHA+ (KT266A) was legendary though, would do 200MHz FSB. KR7A & 8KHA+ were the OC'ing boards back then. Still have a compare link to a 200FSB project on KT266A. Enough with all this good-old-times bull:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:, let me get to the point...

I'm pretty confident (by experience) the mainboard is holding you back.
