I thought I'd share this with you guys.

I was being an intern at a private company today taking orders, configuring systems, and then shipping them to their clients and partners. I came across this stock area where it had a bunch of huge boxes. I figured those were servers, but asked the manager what those boxes were anyway. He replied those are HP and Sun/Oracles servers, so he had to show me the other room where the technicians already opened 20 servers and tested them before shipping them to the client, The McGraw Hill Companies.

As soon as I saw this beast, I almost peed on myself (and had to take this picture ), and then WCG came to my mind. Boy, how would WCG run on this beast?

4 x Intel Xeon X7500 series (2.66 GHz, 8 cores, 16 threads each processor!), 128 GB of RAM, 6 x 137 GB SAS hard drives.

    Found this image from bit-tech:

Well, as they say "if you have to ask, you can't afford it..."

    I'm in that boat, too.

Yea that true. Just read a review with the fastest chips the 2.26ghz ones on a quad board. 600 watts at idle and 1100 or so at load. Might need to rethink that after the first power bill.

    Nice.

I do Solutions @ HP Houston for Large Enterprise Business I have 20 racks loaded with the new 8-socket G7 servers with eight-core chips. Amazing speed and all the racks are for the same customer.

I wonder, if they would notice if you replaced the standard "idle" process, with one that consumes more power (wcg)

I am guessing those connectors plug into a 1Gbit or more likely 10Gbit backplane. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I wonder how loud the cooling must be to keep the memory and cpus cool?

Prod boxes are off-site where I work, so I have no access to such hardware pr0ns. Very impressive... but wouldn't this (on its own) still get its arse handed to it by a dual westy in an SR-2?

If you could get those westmeres up to 7GHz.

    2 x Westmere = 2x6C/12T, so 12C/24T at 3+GHz. 12*4200=50,400MHz. (13,662 BOINC)

    4 x Xeon X7500 = 4x8C/16T, so 32C/64T at 2667MHz. 32*2667=85,344MHz. (23,134 BOINC)

Since WCG scales pretty much linearly, this Xeon box would do around 69.3% more work. However, for the money spent, the SR-2 is a better choice, as are quad-Opteron 6100's (4x12C).

The Westmere-EP's do much better in performance per Watt with the 32nm process vs 45nm process. And price per performance isn't even close. Can't beat the massive core count of these Octo-core quad socket and Octo-socket machines though. Some of the Octo-socket IBM machines output 35,000 boinc in a good day but I don't think they are full time crunchers for the obvious reasons.

i would put my money on the 10Gbit, or FiberChannel is a possibility even
with the ludicrous demand placed on some of these systems lightspeed is the only choice to keep up with the work load
