AMD Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 confirmed to be launched on 22.10.2010

It is confirmed that AMD has changed its mind for the second time and will launch the Radeon HD 6000 Series on 22 October 2010. The launch was initially slated for 12 October but was pushed back a week to the 19th prior to this. Fudzilla has also confirmed that the Radeon HD 6000 Series will launch on the 22nd.

    Paper launch or real launch

I like the way they kept quiet about it, I had no idea this was coming.

yeah, you know your pr rocks if nobody knows your launching a product... wait what?
i really dont like how ati is keeping it quiet about their new parts... its too quiet...
i can understand it to some degree to make it harder for nvidia to counter, but i doubt that it actually makes a difference...
and a product preview is really useful for customers and a company, i mean intel and amd are actually embracing this and seeding early samples and previewing it officially... all the while ati goes back to how pr was done 10-20 years ago, what product, there is no product, who told you there was a product?

eh, this seems so strange from AMD.
let us know what these cards actually are, let us drool over benchmarks, give us something.
if release date is really just over a week away... wtf are they waiting for?

I gather that when you say cyprus (which I don't even know what it is) you mean Cayman.... and not the 1+ year old Cypress....

the last 2 years have been by far the most boring in video card history. I was excited for the HD6870 until all the wild motioning implying it will not be replacing the HD5870.

blame tsmc, there is nothing that u can do without smaller transistors/gates when u hit the peak of your TDP limit or close to it. i guess that amd could make a 300W monster like the ferni but i dont see them doing that

it must suck for ATi to be so perfect and have to deal with tsmc's incompetence huh?

i blame ATi. there is a lot they can do on 40nm. i have not been paying attention to the rumors lately but i think there will some nice performance improvements, even for just a year's time.

so they were supposed to have a new arch, but they cannot make that chip since TSMC failed. im not saying that the new arch would be great but when u have less than year to design something that is not your road map since your fab did not get their done u cannot expect much improvement staying in your die/tdp limits

    now wheres the Nvidia cards?

the GTX480 feels damn old these days.

So the rumor is the HD6870 will ~= the HD5870? Do we have any solid facts? Really don't want to wade through that gigantic beast of a thread for these cards

Wahh? GTX 480 is like a spry young sapling with us just barely getting to see what the core can do with 3rd party cards coming out like the MSI GTX 480 Lightning and Gigabyte GTX 480 SOC.

On paper the 6770 is slightly better than the 5850 with max board power marginally less...and behind the 5870 in performance (except for pixel fillrate). I'd imagine the 6850 around 5870 (maybe a tad more) performance and the HD6870 pulling ahead of the GTX480 by a small margin.

It all depends on tesselation performance from now to the future I suppose.

it is an interesting thing to ponder. will old ati cards have a worse price/perf ration than the new, or will it be a way to clean out the dusty warehouse shelves.
