Hold you horses! The GTX475 may be looming on the horizon

Nvidia apparently was holding back with the GTX460.

The new GF104 has eight Streaming multiprocessors (SM) while the old GF104 had seven. This could very easily be the same GF104 chip with one streaming multiprocessor disabled, as Nvidia simply didn’t need that more power back in July time when it launched Geforce GTX 460 cards. Now, since they might need some more power, they simply enabled the eight SM unit.

no, i think they are still going to hold back.
factory oc'd gtx 460 is the official response to the 6870.

its disappointing to have products on the market that aren't at their full potential though.

looks like 1/7th more power if the current one has 7, and the same clocks can be reached.

but this is fud and lots of "who knows?"

I think it would most certainly be accompanied by a clock speed increase as well, the GTX 460 once overclocked can match a 6870 for the most part so It would not to to much once the Extra SP's and TMU's come into play to get 6870 level performance or just above.

Even the 8800gt only had 112 shaders enabled until the 9800gt when they unlocked the full 128 shaders, same deal with the 460's it would seem.

Is anyone really that surprised? If they can make a card that out-runs the GTX 470 out of a chip that costs less to produce and uses less power then why wouldn't they do it?

cause they have to get rid of the 470s, which might help explain the price drop

To clear current stock... Who would buy a GTX 470 when there's a better card that runs cooler and uses less power?

If you want to see how a 384sp 475 would perform take a look at a pair of 450's in SLI as they have 384sp combined.

I don't think so... If you have a cheaper, faster chip with better margins you get it out ASAP - Just like Nvidia did with G92. I'm betting more on poor yields on GF104.

FWIW it took 1½ month between neutered G92 (8800gt) and full G92 (8800GTS) to launch. So far it's been 4½ month and full GF104 is still MIA.

based only on SP increase, it should be 15% faster than a 460 at the same clocks. a 450sli is around 25% though somehow

LOL, yeah. When you look at AMD's number-game with 68xx, nVidia should call it's GF104 as GTX 5xx too. But I'm afraid it's too late to re-brand the GF104 now, nVida is taken on it's own game in this round.

    Think full-spec GF106 & 104 chips could end-up as 500 Series parts.

Yeah, it's fully possible, because the number-war is on, until they both run out of numbers , But in case, its' going to be a big mess, with a lot of confusions in both camps, soon.

I wanted this card but it never came (there were rumors long ago that a "full" GF104 384 SP card would be released by now) and my GTX 280 died, waited one month for Barts using my backup 7900GTO card meanwhile, realized Barts was no better option than a GTX 460 with the recent price cuts and taking GTX 460's better overclockability + perf gain from it into account, bought a 2 month used GTX 460 1GB cheap and then this topic shows up... now I rather hope it stays as a rumor.

A GF104 with 384 SPs would probably have enough capability to at least beat HD6870 depending on clocks a little and maybe even challenge HD5870 (especially with overclocking capability taking into account) for an attractive price due to how hard nvidia has already driven itself into pricewar (looking at GTX 460). HD5870 performance for $250~270, would be nice, looking at current GTX 460 pricing, that would look like a rather plausible pricing for a 384 SP GF104 even if it would perform like a $379 HD5870.

EDIT: BTW, the price cuts of GTX 460 1GB especially doesn't seem to have taken effect in US yet, in Germany the cheapest GTX 460 1GB went from like 185~190 EUR before Barts launch to 155~160 EUR for the cheapest cards which would normally correspond to $179~189 newegg price. Still looks like most GTX 460 cost $219 US.

LOL but to your logic nvidia would need 22nm or 28nm to be able to call it a new gen ... but since nvidia only enabled a locked shader cluster its a rebrand ... nothing else ...

Great, and what are they gonna do with the old GF100 chips? Cook their steaks on them?

Wouldn't it make more sense to get some money out of old stock chips and then sell new ones?

If you pay attention, I've been fare in this case. I'm laughing at both of them, and blaming both for this stupid number-game. I wish others (you know who ) could be as fare, at least sometimes, and look outside the box.
