    Chilean miners are free!

First miner emerged at 4am UK time. 8 have been brought to the surface so far.

I really hope there are NO problems with the final part of this

2 months almost a mile underground.... and they held it together. That is.....im not sure what words to use really.

They probably cried a lot... and slept a lot..

I'd hate to have been in their situation for even a week!

Here's a link to a short blurb about each miner, some of which tell of what they did. One man tried running each day. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/...n6953507.shtml

Underground mines are often quite roomy. At a mile deep, heat may have been a problem. Lack of light and food certainly were. Water may or may not have been a problem. As an engineering student, I worked the Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD one summer. We had large quantities of fresh, cold water available (chillers to cool the air used it). We also had break rooms, with toilets and tables. The adits ("tunnels") were never smaller than about 20' across and 15' high, some of the stopes (where the mining takes place) were 100's of feet on a side and 10-30' high. Plenty of room. But turn out the lights, and there is no darkness deeper.

Not the way you said it and let me be blunt, there are things in this world that are exempt from jokes. Things so serious that one leaves them alone.
    This is one of those.

I mean no disrespect, but I've always been a lighthearted person, anything can be joked about in the right light. I've heard other people making these jokes, and I think its funny and apparently I'm not the only one.

Fair enough. Perhaps I was reading something into your comments that wasn't there or maybe it's me being overly sensitive on this subject.

This rescue of the miners touched me in a way I didn't expect.
Maybe it's seeing the good in man after all the bad we see every day that moved me.

Why did it take them so long to make that rescue device? Isn't it just a tube shaped escape pod, pulled up by a cable?

Just like what happenned in the Gulf..
People facing a new challenge, had to think it out, devise the hardware, test, hope and try not to kill the miners in the process.
Also there is a factor we often miss.
We make the assumption that the people in charge are smarter than we are.
Not always true as much as we wish it to be.

I always hope they're at LEAST as smart.... lol, but sadly many of them often prove that not to be true. haha

    What do you guys think?
Not a mining expert, but when it first started i told my mom "man if they can't save them here, imagine over there forgeettiittt" but i didn't know about the NASA pod at the time.
She said they were doing a good job and turning into a display of national pride and this and that...
Did they actually do a pretty good job compared to the US? Sure looks that way with saving all 33, i had to eat my words.

Much as wdrzal said, the borehole was what took time. Precision rock boring for 2000 feet is no simple, quick feat. And Kingcarcas, NASA was involved in the capsule design. It wasn't the "US" that keeps performance lacking, it's leaders (current AND past) who waffle over political gain versus people.

The escape pod has been used before, this one was improved over the previous one, though. The pod must contain oxygen for the rescuee to breathe, must be relatively spark-free (methane, anyone?), must be self-centering with guide wheels that can take abuse by the rock, must have communications with the passenger, a lot of considerations. http://www.theengineer.co.uk/design-...005467.article and http://www.aolnews.com/world/article...small/19667140

My Dad was a industrial mechanic who worked for Barnes & Tucker coal company in their centrial shop outside wher the first capsule was built per MSHA. When I was some where around to 9 years old the first rescure capsule was built by my dad and other workers in that shop in PA. Around the mid 60's. The engingering came from MSHA & B & T. It was never used but multiple ones where built and stationed at exhaust ventilation fan outlets & on mine rescue emergency response vechiles.. None where ever used at any of the mines in cambria county but a few years ago 9 men where resuced from Que creek mine as it floded as a bulkhead gave way,60 miles south in somerset county,Pa..Not far from where the9/11 flight crased in Pa. Befrore the 60's most machines were gear ,chain and belt driven. It wasn't until Hydraulics came into all industrys that allowed 30" holes to be bored through solid rock. Some where I have a picture of the very first capsule (with me trying in out for size,it was on the shop floor, painted all yellow)and I think I have a copy of the orginal Blue prints some where. I too started as a mine engineer untill all the mines closed in the early 80's. Went on to mechanical & electrical engineering.
