    Nice Ultra-wide-angle lenses on budget?

Being a student, I finally have a chance to spend the money on a SLR.

I love shotting architecture and sceneries, and I am laying my eyes on ultra wide angle lenses.

I am on a budget, so I will settle with buying used from eBay or craigslist; you know the idea . I am thinking of the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 or the Sigma 10-20mm.

Oh by the way, I will settle for a Canon

Film or APS-C? I'm guessing APS-H and Full Frame are out since you're on a budget.

@Jokester - I sort of like that distorting effect of ultrawides

    @itznfb - I will be shooting APS-C.

I want to pay as little as possible for the most bang for buck.

I'd definitely try to find a good deal on the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. They are pretty hard to find for Canon and they are price gouged pretty much everywhere for both Nikon and Canon. I try to like Sigma lenses but they just don't produce great results. I don't like having to fix color and contrast in post because the lens doesn't get it right...

I really considered the 11-16mm, but they are pretty expensive to find for used; the price is same for new of not more expensive.

Trying to keep it under $400. $450 will be the most extreme I can go.

What's your definition of wide angle? I definitely recommend the Tokina 11-16 (Owner of one) or the Sigma, but if you're a little adventuresome and don't mind manual focus, you can find nice deals on somewhat-wide (~20mm) Zeiss Flektogons on eBay.

You can also consider the Tokina 12-24 f4 if you are on a budget
    http://www.amazon.com/Tokina-12-24MM...6953907&sr=8-1

Its extremely sharp and has the least barrel distortion. Its sharpness is being compared to that of L lens, and is just a tad bit less sharp then the 11-16 wide open, and equally sharp when stopped down.

I have used the Sigma 10-20, I really liked it, but the barrel distortion was way too much and was not at all useful with people. Also there was a lot of light falloff and the sharpness wasn't consistent throughout the frame even stopped down. Also I felt 10mm was way to wide, i always end up cropping the sides off. I felt 12mm would be a perfect start (IMO), I shoot mostly landscape and I felt the use of 12 - 15mm more.

the Tamron 10-24 is really nice.
and there is a rebate right now too
    399 after rebate
    http://www.porters.com/tamron-sp-af1...canon-eos.html

Porters is a local store here so i would hit up amazon.com and see what they have for prices.

this also has a really close focal range so you get some really neat effects on close objects.
here is what the close up distortion does at 10mm

you could also do something in the zoom range too.
the older Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 is actually better, and more sharp than the newer 17-50mm with image stablizer.
17mm isnt WIDE on a crop in the true sense but its wide enough for most uses.
plus its F/2.8 thru the entire range.

I wouldn't say its a killer deal but if the lens is in excellent shape then its worth picking up.

That's a nice deal, but you should check the condition of the lens. A new one goes for about $450-$490

$550 is a good price for the 11-16mm, I think I paid $600 for mine and it was damn well worth it.
The build quality on that lens is great, I love the focus ring as well, quality stuff.
And f/2.8! You can use it indoors no problem and since it's wide angle you can really get your shutter speeds low if need be.

Yes, there is very limited range on it, but I didn't buy an UWA so I could zoom in on things.

My budget is around $400, I can't go beyond that too much

Well for now I am just shooting for deals on the Tokina 12-24mm. I will also look at the Tamron 10-24mm as Lestat stated if I can find a deal for USED on it..

    Thanks for the help

oh there are always better for sure.
but in that range on a crop i think the tamron 10-24 and the tokina 11-16 are the most affordable in that price range.

i dont have much need for a super wide like that so i dont look at them often to know if there is anything better.
