    x1900xt overheating in win 7

    My x1900xt is overheating.

    Seems like it only overheats in startcraft 2, I have to do a gpu recover every 2-5 minutes...

    In windows xp the fan would ramp up as you play but in win 7 it just stays at low speed 100% of the time.

    I've always used ATITray tools to manually ramp up the fan (ccc wont let you on the x1900) BUUTT I can't find any fan speed tools that don't require drivers to run and they are all unsigned. You can hold F8 to allow windows to start unsigned drivers and SC2 will NOT load.

    Very frustrating, I dont have money to buy a new card. I had a custom cooler for it but it got thrown out somewhere along the line. Any suggestions?

    Solution is here.

    Overheating GPU fix:
    Simply go to the library Documents (if you’re on Windows 7). The actual file path is: C:\Users\[username]\Documents

    Inside the documents folder open: Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt

    Add the following two lines to the variables.txt anywhere:
    frameratecapglue=30
    frameratecap=60
    IQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    outdated hardware

    !!!

    I hope this works. I played for about three hours last night and I had to alt-tab about every 4 min to let the card cool down.

    Been googling for days I just knew I couldn't be the onlyone with the issue.

    I'll try when I get home and let you know if it works.

    Didn't work. The fan just won't ramp up until it's too hot.

    HMMM...

    You could manually control the fan speed. And maybe actually flash a BIOS with an improved fan throttle curve.

    Yeah; I'm in... How?

    Like I said I can't find any sort of fan control software that works on Win7.

    Hell even underclocking it would work - but again I can't find software to do it.

    Hm, what about RivaTuner? I doubt MSI Afterburner supports your card...

    OK; figured out a fix for now...

    I just run SCII in windowed mode. The card never clocks up meaning it doesn't overheat...

    Silly but I'm happy just got done playing for about 3 hours straight. Great game.
