What psu's are WC ers choice?

Perhaps I should post elsewhere but as my power supply fan seems to be the loudest part of my watercooled setup these days perhaps you guys can suggest quiet psu at load ? Preferably as loud as GT 1850's, single rail and modular?

    Thanks,

Corsair AX850/Seasonic X-Series 850 would be perfect for you.

No, not in any way. But I would take that over the OCZ Z-Series, that stuff is nasty. I'd stay away.

I'm running a seasonic x-750 (the biggest gold rated psu i could buy back this summer) and now I'd do either that or ax-1000.

hmmmm, let's check what jonnyguru said:

    http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...tory2&reid=153

850 HX cold peak efficiency: 90.1%
850 HX hot peak efficiency: 90.6%

    http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...tory3&reid=197

    AX 850 cold peak efficiency: 89.5 %
    AX 850 hot peak efficiency: 89.6 %

so, yeah, more efficiency for less money

I knew that because I did my research and just bought one.

Peak /= efficiency as a whole. The HX850 holds 90% from ~350-500w where it then drops to 86.1 from there and finally down to 84.9. The AX850 holds 87% up till the last test when it's at 85.6%.

Not just that, but efficiency does not make a PSU. The AX850 is quieter, and doesn't get as hot. It hardly puts out heat at all. Just look at the exaust temps in both reviews from the cold box.

NOT just this, but these PSU's were reviewed by two different people, with different equipment, and different power meters. For all we know, there is a 3% error tolerance. Ripple seems to be suppressed better (not that it matters at this point) on the AX850 as well.

HX850 is manufactured by Channel Well Technology while the AX850 is manufactured by Seasonic. The HX850 is only half modular, while the AX850 is fully modular. They are not even remotely the same PSU.

read my first post: I never said "the same PSU". I said "basically the same efficiency for less money". the HX hold up pretty well with 84% efficiency at the lower score.

They may have changed equipment or tester, but a LOAD is a LOAD, isn't it? And the temperatures are not comparable since the intake temperature on the HX tests are not the same. It seems that the HX passed more severe condition tests than the AX.

Are you kidding about the "fully modular" right? Are you able to run your computer without the ATX cable and PCI-E for one video card? These are the non modular cables on the HX, the ones you always use.

The other differences are even less important: noise was described as "The unit stayed pretty quiet, even in the hot box" and " the fan produced virtually no noise". Manufacturer does really count as an advantage?

Whatever, it is just my opinion. IMHO the HX is a better bang for your buck compared to the AX

    awesome stuff lea_bsb

hx is better than ax....voltage regulation wise ...id go hx850 over ax850 anytime and cheaper too....

about efficiency at max load....who does that? lol

Water cooling choice would be a Liquid-Cooled Koolance 1300w

    Or the 1000w http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=26347

Interesting stuff guys, I am really interested in affordable, quiet cooling. I guess I see two real choices for me either the Channel Well HX 8500 from Corsair or the XFX Black Edition 850W Sea Sonic unit, my only concern with the Corsair is the crappy modular pci-e cables and with the XFX the Adda fan.....

Seasonic X-750. I run a fanless system bar the fan in the psu and it rarely even spins and even when it does it runs so slowly it's inaudible. Would probably be different if it was running at near it's capacity though. Highly recommended.

You want a cheap, but decent PSU, how about this:

    https://www.geeks.com/woot/

    Thread about them:

If you do not care about a warranty this is a pretty decent deal, plus you could always swap out the fan since there is no fear of losing your warranty.
