    itznfb's Nikon D7000

    Pre-ordered my Nikon D7000 today.

I'll use this thread to post samples on release day and answer any questions.

Edit: Oh yea... I'll have a Nikon D5000 for sale when the D7000 comes in

    Edit2: A 0 fell off my D7000. And my D5000 is sold

Most likely a 2nd body. I may start doing weddings so I'd probably run around with a 70-200 f/2.8 on one body and swap uwa and a few primes on the 2nd body. Plus I miss carrying a 2nd body just for general use... so much easier than swapping lenses.

The D7000 looks so much better than Canon's equivalent 60D. Really good move by Nikon! Too bad the primes like the 24mm 1.4 and 35mm are outrageously expensive compared to the same Canon primes

When you compare the primes side by side you can see why. The canon quality on those is not the same standard. Same with the 50mm. Not sure why.

grats! seems like a very nice camera...
since i've invested quite a bit on canon lenses, it'll have to be the 60D for my wife/2nd body for me...

How is the screen layout on the D7000? Is it text based only, more like the D90? Not as easy and good looking as on the D5000? If it had the same layout i would swap my D5000 out inn an instance.

No I don't have the 17-55. I had a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for a while but the color and contrast were terrible so I got rid of it. The kit 18-55mm Nikon makes is pretty much the best DX standard zoom lens made so I don't really have a need for the 17-55. If I need low light performance at that range I'm going to be using lighting setups anyway...

Yea the new Nikon primes are long overdue and incredibly expensive but man do they deliver. The samples and limited I've had with them blow you away. They are ... perfect.

I haven't seen it yet but I'll bet a dollar it'll be identical to the D300s.

The only thing that bother me about this camera is the dual SD card slots. It only shoots 6fps but it's still a small buffer and it'll hit the cards in about 8-10 RAW shots. 60mb/s is a must and you won't find that on any SD card.

Can't you run the cards in raid0 in camera and get ~50mb/s with sandisk extreme III cards? What kind of in camera write options do they have?

That would be a new feature in the D7000. The D3s and D300s have dual slots but they don't have the ability to write back and forth between the slots. You only have 3 options... 1. Mirror 2. Spill-Over 3. RAW+JPG

Rumor is D700 and D300s replacements could be as far away as 2012. I've also heard there is no sign of a D3s or D3x replacement in the near future either.

    thats too bad.
i applaud and respect nikon's decisions to hold on to their technology until the last minute, but truth be told they have technologies available that would put the current products to shame.. in a big way, why they dont use that to start pumping out new products that could easily put them into financial heaven, is beyond me.
the same holds true for canon, they too have technology that would put their current products to shame and they are using it for future releases,,, far down the road.
and i respect that, this is what R&D is all about, but in a world where technology continues to expand and grow, we have two companies who continue to take baby steps when they could be taking the photogrpahic world by storm.

    I'm in no hurry
but I am sure they will release the D800 replacement sooner than 2012
my best bet would be the summer of 2011
but secretly I hope it will be sooner, because Canon 5D mk2 sales have been better from day one and Nikon must answer before (or soon after) the 5D mk3 release

She actually hasn't been using it. She opted for binoculars instead and she's been enjoying that much more than the photography. So in the event that she does want to snap off a few photos I usually take my D50 with me as well.

    got a little voyeur there

when you get camera, can you get into this feature that I thought was brilliant:
maybe you can better explain it or better yet, demonstrate that feature. advance thanks

from Nikon: Virtual Horizon Graphic Indicator shows whether the camera is level and in Live View mode, lets you place a grid over the scene you’re about to shoot — an invaluable tool for shooting landscapes and architecture.

The Virtual Horizon is actually on the D300s, D3 and D3s as well. It might be on the D700 too. I actually have used it while shooting city scapes. Here's a video of how it functions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0ImaBTIEtc
