AMD Benchmarks Zacate APU, 2x Faster GPU Performance than Core i5

It's tradition for AMD to have an off-site meeting place during IDF week and this year is no exception. I headed over to AMD's suite to talk about servers, desktops and the imminent mobile Fusion launches. We've talked about AMD's three new microprocessors in great detail before. Bulldozer is targeted at the high end desktop and server markets, due out sometime in 2011 (sampling in Q4). Llano will arrive at the end of Q2 2011 and feature multiple 32nm Phenom II derived cores paired with a very beefy AMD DX11 GPU. What I'm most excited about however is the parts that will begin shipping in Q4 2010: Zacate for mainstream notebooks (18W TDP) and Ontario for netbooks (9W TDP).

Well aware but Im speaking of Llano vs. Sandy socket 1155(and whatever mobile parts) in all around performance(power, gpu, cpu) seeing as how Bull Dozer wont have a iGPU and will be up against Sandy 2011 sockets.

that was my point... why compare Llano to even nehalem based cpu's even with or without igpu ... it wont win on cpu apps ... now the good thing ... gpu apps it will pull up right .. but the real test is bulldozer .. and based on the numbers of zacate and bobcat all over the web i think bulldozer should do great even without an igpu for now ..... and later incarnation with igpu should do even better

If the *netbook* version of bobcat can go toe to toe with the *desktop* SB GPU, then it's still going to have an advantage in graphics vs. even an ULV SB.

I wonder what AMD did with core i5 platform to get 14fps at low res. City oh heroes is a very old game playable even on intel's x3100 at low resolution.

Well ofcourse, silly billy, they set up the benchmark as so to show their product in the best light, as that is the ONLY way they could ever be competitive to the almighty power of the dark force!

oh yeah here comes the intel fan club... perhaps search one with a i5 culv and let him benchmark the same. it's obvious that this wasn't a full i5 cpu that would be on par with gpu performance, but killed on power consumption.

Well... As amd fan you tend to believe in anything amd say or show about its competitors... good for you. I prefer to wait for independant tests.

The game *just* got a new expansion which beefed up the visuals, and that's what they used.

if we can find netbooks under 400, with that chip; I'd be extremely happy

Modern Ram, makes an old overclocker miss BH-5 and the fun it was

Nice, I'm sure some game consoles, the next MacMini and notebooks/netbooks will be very interestered in that.
However, I would like to see what a desktop/workstation version around 95W of TDP can do.

The CPU in Intel powered notebook was Core i5 520M.
Of course AMD could set Win 7 to Power Saving mode on one and Maximum Performance on the other machine. That is if they wanted bad PR ...

Psychadelic benchmark (HTML5) AMD posted shows 10x perf of zacate over i5-520M. Definitely there's something wrong with that. I'll test IE9 on my i3-530 today. May be i'll test CoH as well.

I'm downloading CoH trial right now. Will test it later.

It is very possible that AMD deliberately chose a game that favors AMD IGP

Anyway, I don't trust any test done by AMD. I recommend to wait for independent and neutral review before making any final judgment

Of course you can't expect that a single demonstration by one company will give you a 100% accurate description of the performance. But it would be a very bad PR to show something that's way off. So I do expect Zacate to have better GPU than i5. Maybe not twice as good, but definitely better.
And I do think that there will be some advanced power saving features to that GPU. I think it's safe to say that the GPU uses most of the power in a Zacate during load. And I believe it's easier to save power in idle in the GPU than the CPU. That makes me believe that a 18W TDP Zacate will consume less in typical use than any other 18W TDP chip.
