Best SSD drives for RAID0 ?

    Hi all,

Hoping some1 can help me out as I have not been able to keep up with SSD hardware. Trying to get 2 SSD drives to put into raid (need fast write/read speeds - emphasis on the write) stability is a must - are SSD drives in raid mature enough yet? have up to $1000 to spend if needed but anywhere between 120 gb to 250 gb of space would be enough thanks for any advice.
    Dell 9300 1.6@2.13 ghz 1 gig ddr2 533 fsb, geforce 6800go for about $950

    Dell 8400 630 @ 4 ghz EE, 160 gig, 512 mb ddr2, x300se 2 X 17" LCDs dvd burner and dvd rom $650

HTPC: shuttle sn85g4v3 3000+ DTR, radeon 9600XT, ATI TV wonder pro, dvd burner 512 DDR around $450

The new Sandforce drives have the best write speeds. For under $600 you can pick up two OCZ Vertex 2 120GB or Corsair F120 drives. The sandforce drives are suitable for Raid 0 as well due to their high resiliency.

My vote would be w/ 4 OWC 40GB Mercury's or 4 40GB Corsair F40's then paired w/ an LSI 9211-4i. Should total around $600. That is if you have the room for the drives/card.

thanks for the advice so far, unfortunately all the pciE lanes will be occupied (3 camera controllers and a vid card) so I can't go with the revo drive. In reading the reviews of some of the SSDs with the sandforce controllers it appears as though stability is still an issue especially when waking from sleep mode. The workstation is an HP z800 with the option to get the intel ssd drives - so they should be safe. i just don't know if the reason for instability with sandforce is just stupidity which is very possible when reading newegg reviews or if it is actually inherent in the hardware. Again thanks for all the input so far

for what its worth the camera manufacturer recommends a 15k RPM drive for one camera, not too many people have tried controlling 3 simultaneously so I'm trying to make sure we are on the side of too fast instead of too slow.

I would get some 256GB c300's and call it a day...or wait for the new Intels.

I'd be interested in seeing what the new Intel drives have to offer as well.

Be sure to take a look at this before trying to RAID 0 C300's.

The scenario that you have to create to force the drive into this condition isn’t realistic at all, however that isn’t to say that over months or years of heavy use that you wouldn’t find yourself in the same situation. Either way, Crucial corrected the problem and spent weeks validating the firmware fix. Crucial did continue to sell drives during this period, which I wasn’t exactly happy about.
Most users will never experience this problem, and Crucial have corrected it already.

Sweet. I was a bit worried cause I had heard the C300's have idle garbage collection (so I assumed they would not degrade that badly in RAID), but Anand's conclusion about how it's not very aggressive had me a bit worried. Good to know Crucial fixed this.

Anand is a nOOb... My crucials in RAID0 are extremely fast lol, i ran a test with HD tune and average read/write was like around 520-535...They are sickly fast, i literally have a hard time botting into my bios with these lol, i have to keep hitting the delete button as soon as my Mb gets power cuz it flys thru it so quick lol. Im thinking about picking up 2 more they are so awesome

It's not about speed, everyone knows they're fast. It's about performance degredation over time.

learning to love my C300's 1200/1300 MB/s read & write. One will not know until you use them. These drives are very new and every so often manufacturers come out with updates and firmwares to correct problems and improve performace.

    Good luck in your search.

Its always about performance FIRST , then degedation later.. Everyting in life degrades , but there are ways to avoid it and make life on SSDs last.. Eveyone knows SSDs degrade over time and the way technology updates i highly doubt your gonna kill your SSD before the next purchase you make.

One test that would be interesting to see for a C300 is to do random 4KB writes for 12 hours and plot the write speed versus time. Then compare it to the P300 write saturation plot shown here:

    http://www.micronblogs.com/2010/08/s...terprise-ssds/

I'm not sure if the C300 would perform as well as the enterprise-class P300.

hi guys, long time lurker and since we are on a topic i had a question about i will ask it here vs starting another thread.

What is your guys view on best Linux os/swap drive?

I am debating between vertex2 and c300's (mirrored). I have also heard it would be best to throw the swap on a spindle vs SSD (machine will have 64gb ram) and 8 160 intel g2's for main storage.

    Thoughts/comments?
