    A few things:

    - $269 is a pretty good price IMO
    - Nobody who talks about it actually knows what's coming up from the competition. People who CAN talk about it are under an NDA.
    - You can't walk around thinking about "what's next" or purchases will neve be made
    - I'm disappointed about the warranty length

It still matters WHEN you release the product to the market, if this card with a quite hefty price premium had been available at GTX 460 launch it had made much more sense than now when we're like 1.5 months away from a plausible card from the competitor that could be a lot better. The closer to a next gen product launch the more people will wait and see what that one is about. It's the rebates of existing cards that attracts people right now like the cheapest GTX 460 1GB for $200 or the the pricecuts of the 768MB version. At launch higher quality/overclocked cards sells better than close to a next gen being launched.

We'll have a review of this at TechREACTION in a week and a half. We'll test against the standard GTX460 SuperClock EE.

true but it depends on the schedule of "what's next" in that case it should not be that far. That fact would make one consider waiting

these tweaked boards dont seem interesting if you look closely.

they probably overclock 150mhz more than a normal board.

    50 bucks extra for 150mhz?

it is probably like 2% more performance.

Upping voltage to get the clocks also gets you 470-class power consumption, so really, what's the point?

To be fair waiting six weeks isn't a big deal, especially compared to the 6 months people waited for the 480GTX.

Oh yes, I can see it now:

    - Wait 6 weeks

    - Card comes out and is priced competitively (ie: in proportion to performance)

    - The usual crowd cried foul that it is priced too high

Rinse and repeat. It happens with EVERY launch from EVERY company.

And I will remind you that the whole "six weeks" thing for an actual GTX 460 competitor is a baseless rumor and nothing more at this point.

So are you saying that its not worth waiting when its a fact that next gen cards are coming this fall?

As others have said, if it was 6 months or if we didnt have an idea of approximate launch dates then itd make sense. Right now, its worth waiting IMO

I'd certainly wait till end of October to see what Barts XT and Pro have to offer. Of course if you gotta go you gotta go.

Not completely baseless as it's now written in to AMD's drivers.

a year ago at this time people were saying wait for fermi, and every month it was wait for fermi, then it was december, then it was march...

how do you know when AMD will release a new card? how do you know how much it will cost? how do you know how it will perform?

No but it doesn't take a genius to work out the next gen will be released soon.
AMD also confirmed Cypress would get a refresh before the end of the year.

I'm not saying that. What I am saying is that people have already started assuming what will be released and how it will perform. That always leads to disappointment.

To be fair, new cards pop up in drivers all the time... IIRC a few of the 7 series cards from NVidia popped up like 3+ months before their release.

Anyway, when it comes to the discussion at hand, I'll say what I always do. Upgrade when you need to, not just because something new came out. I'll admit I just bought a new 460 GTX, but it was more-so because...

1.) someone wanted my 4850(he ONLY plays starcraft 2, his monitor only does 1440x900, and he didn't have much cash)

2.) They overclock like crazy, giving me something fun to toy with.

3.) $200 and if you're lucky you can get rather close to gtx 480 performance.

Now, I said this when ATi launched the 58x0 series, and I'm going to say it again now that NVidia have their 460 out and ATi are likely to launch again soon... Buy if you need to, but if you can wait, there's nothing to lose in doing so. I'd be willing to bet most of you who'd be thinking about buying a new card have capable enough hardware to play the games you play anyway.

Of course, then again, I'm still on the old trusty Q6600 as I haven't been impressed with the performance increases in cpus for my usage anyway, so I guess that shows my stance these days.

The "next gen" might not be as "next gen" as you think.
