Time for a new home server build and ran across the issue of, go all out with server grade parts? or use high end desktop parts? CPU, motherboard, ram only. Have the rest.

It's running now on a P8Z680-m Pro, 2600K, 4x4GB Vengeance 1600 ram, Samsung 830, Seasonic 600w PSU. No issues for a couple of years.

Currently the main function is be on 24/7, to host a HighPoint 2720SGL with a couple of RAID1 arrays, and run Win8, file shares, offsite backup software, torrents, pogoplug/tonido, etc.
Front of the chassis has 4 x 3.5" hot swap, and 4 x 2.5" hot swap. Internal, 6 drives off the 2720SGL and one SSD for OS.

The data itself is critical. Cannot lose important documents, papers, family photos, mp3 collection. CrashPlan and the RAID arrays are set up to handle that well.

The real question is... this was originally going to be a "workstation" build:

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148657

But now I'm wondering if it would be better to take the next step, and move up to Xeon, ECC, and a server board?

Any opinions on whether its worth it to go ECC / XEON and lose the more flashy desktop add-ons? It would have been nice to have a board that can do double duty in case parts ever get traded out... In reality tho, this system probably won't trade any parts with the ones it serves.

Thanks for any advice!
