Changed from E6550 to QX6850 = Poor Overclock

    Hi everybody!
    I need help!!!!
I had an E6550 on a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R, it was working like this:
from 2.33Ghz to 3.5Ghz (7x500Mhz) - Stable at Linx Max memory 20 passes
    with my PC9200 memos at 1000Mhz(PC8000) 5-5-5-18

I got an used, lapped QX6850 and now I can't even reach 3.5Ghz linx stable.

    The fastest config I can use is 8X425 = 3.4Ghz with 1.38750V on BIOS, 1,328V in CPU-Z

    Please can somebody help me?
it's very annoying to overclock 4 times less (50% to 13%) a 10 times more expensive processor...

    Thanks!

    Updated your bios correct?

It could be the fact that your 775 motherboard wasn't designed to take a Quad Core efficiently. I would check to see how many power phases it has.

Try a higher multiplier. 12 usually runs great.

The bios is the newest, F12, and QX6850 is supported since F9, so i think that's ok... the mobo supports even QX9770 so i believe it should hold a qx6850...

    Kal-EL
I thought I should try lowering the multiplier to get a higher fsb and more performance (assuming my mobo can hold a 500FSB as I used before), but now that you mentioned it I will make some tests with 12X...

A screenshot for it running at 9X378:

thanks all for the help, i'm doing some linx testing so it will take some time... but i'll answer in the mean time

If you catch a good lead on your current overclock, the lower fsb should be offset by the final clock speed.

tried to use 12X but no success, it didn't even boot, had to clear cmos every time, i tried 3 times... highest multiplier i can use is 11 and now i'm testing 318Mhz fsb = 3498mhz... Honestly i'm disapointed and kind of lost, i believe wither the mobo or proc is limmiting overclock, but I can't define which one is causing problems.

You noticed ya temps at only 3.4 ? 80°C , you got a hottie there...
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

Yeah... I'm going to stick with 1.425V in bios, it's already getting too hot, 15-20 from TJ max.

My ambient temperature is 25ºC, idle temp around 50ºC and full temp around 83ºC using a TJmax of 100 in realtemp.

After all the afternoon testing I decided to go with 8x425 for now. I'll try to optmize some parameters but i gave up already.
My main goal in changing processores was to have a great gain in performance and it happened, i went from 24Gflops to 44Gflops in Linx and the same video got it's conversion time lowered in 33%.(12 to 8 minutes)

I'm sad that i can't overclock more because of extreme heat generated, but i'm not going to spend more money on this build unless something fails.

Now i started lowering voltages, one by one I will test what I really need to keep it stable. since I can't have a higher frequency I will have low voltages...

the biggest problem with that board is voltage instability
better board wouldnt need so much voltage

I noticed a very weird thing, now ehwn I first turn on the computer it immediately(2 seconds) turns off, and then when i try again it turns on as normal... could this be an issue with voltages not beign stable enough at start up?

euh when doing a cold boot isn't that normal behaviour for these intel boards ? wasn't it related to a strap setting

+1 for a better board. A good P45 should leed you to a better OC and stability. + a good cooling !

You might want to give ThrottleStop a try. Right click on it and select Unlock Max FID/VID and it should give you access and let you adjust your CPU multiplier from within Windows. It might help your overclocking efforts if you can boot up with a lower multi and then increase it when in Windows.

Thanks dude, i'll give it a try, i quickly read the official thread of this software but thought it was only for dual cores.

btw realtemp shows a 12 multipler when i set 11 in bios, I think there might be a bug, but it's only with 11 reporting 12, from 8 to 10 no problems...

Some software gets screwed up when changing the multiplier and some bios versions are probably screwed up too. I bought a QX9650 earlier this year for testing purposes so hopefully both of the programs I posted above will show your multiplier correctly when in Windows. If you have any problems at idle, that's usually a sign that your C1E state needs to be adjusted or your Minimum processor state in the Control Panel - Power Options is not set to 100%.

ThrottleStop is a handy multi-purpose tool and works very well with Core 2 and Core i, mobile and desktop CPUs and has a few features that no other free software currently has. I'm sure Intel has some good software hiding somewhere but they don't like to share the good stuff.

i tested throttle stop and it doesn't allow me to raise the multiplier, i'm currently using 8 and the only available options are 6,7 and 8.

Another thing everytime I turned the computer on it would quickly turn off and then turn on again normally, but I made it stop by changing the memory multiplier from 2.5 to 2.4... memory is slower but it was a PITA...

Athlough I think it's time for a new motherboard, I also think that your CPU is just unlucky. You might have gotten one from a bad batch or something.
    My Media Center: Core 2 Quad Q9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz, 2GB Kingston DDR2 800, Asus P5N7A-VM Motherboard with integrated Geforce 9300 OC'd, Samsung Spinpoint F3 1tb HD103SJ

    Thats what I thought too.
I bet its the motherboard not able to overclock a Quad core with the extra power requirements.
Its only 3 phase I believe, In comprison a Rampage III uses 8 phase for CPU.
