SERIOUSLY!
4870-->5870 is an upgrade!
Now,
5870-->6870 is not!?
Oh man, oh man, oh man, you gotta work out the conflicting ideas in your mind.
Did you seriously simply chose to ignore 4870-->5870 and took 4870-->5770 instead?
I'm speaking out of pure logic here. If Barts is the 6770 series, it's all fine, as 5770 --> 6770 is a perf improvement. Just like it has always been! (well, except for the very low ends)
I thought I'm an ATi fanboy until I saw this thread. Clearly I'm not a fanboy enough.
EDIT: Still no official slides regarding naming.
hay guize, one connector dere
Which means it's official. Barts is 6870. It's not like I'd get tricked by the new naming scheme, but I wish they stuck with the old one. No hope of seeing Antilles Pro or something like that I guess.
Look at price brackets not name's. 4870 to 5870 was an improvement but the price was about $150 more per card than last generation. The 6870 should be ~$250 which puts it back in line with 38**/48** pricing. The Evergreen line was so strong that they were able to sell 5870's for $400-500.

I don't mind what AMD is doing with the naming, i mean, it's quite logical anyway.
But i really think they should keep the 'X2' name, so 6970X2 would be the dual GPU 6970... obviously. Just makes more sense in my eyes. Although i can understand how 'some' people might get confused about the same name, just with an X2 on the end.
If the dual GPU card is going to be called 6990, it doesn't make sense to me. As 6970 to a 6990 doesn't seem like a very big jump (in terms of names) considering it will be nearly double the performance.
I also think some flamers on here should be a bit more adaptable to change

Crunching away...
Ya, it's no more confusing than changing ATI to AMD. Change them both at the same time is better.
