    XT vs. Pro

Is it possible to get a 9800Pro running at XT speeds? How much of a preformance [benchmarking and ingame] difference is there between the two?

XT is only 412/365 so yes, very easily.

So whats the big difference if you can flash an 9800P to an XT and you can overclock it to XT speeds?
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

    And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
    Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
    but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

The R360 and 2,5 ns RAM goes higher than the pro with R350 and 2,8 ns (as most cards have). The XT has 256MB RAM, and it's a little faster clock for clock than the pro in some applications. But if you don't have a lot of money it's not worth the extra cost IMO.

do you think you could get a 98p to run HL2 and Doom3 nicely? or would you need an OC'ed XT for that?

both of those games are supposed to run on low end systems. I heard a 1.5GHZ P4 with a Geforce 3 Ti500 is supposed to be able to run Doom III at 800*600 with detail settings at low/medium with 32 bit color and textures. So I should think a 9500NP would be able to run high detail at 1024*768 if you've got a 2.4GHZ proc and still maintain 60FPS. But I will certainly OC for these games, because I am a resolution junky, I like my games at 1920X1440 with high detail. No need for AA.

XT is did for OC, so it OCs like a beast(ive heard, coze i dont have one and will never have one(next gen)). So you cant compare PRO whit XT, and a + for XT is the stock cooling.

And like endre said the chipset and MEM are better

i run my 128mb pro at 482/371 24/7 with a cheap 5$ custom installed heatsink, my temps are much lower then the temps at stock speed and heatsink, being around 20c full load.

Here's a test that compares XT both stock and and OC'ed with 9800pro 256 stock and XT speeds. It's in norwegian, but you can look at the benchmarks.

9800PRO 256 is worse than the 9800PRO 128. 256 version memories don't overclock as good as the 128 version memories.

No the word from John Carmack himself is the goal they are shooting for is 30fps on a GF4 Ti4600, in the typical system of around 2Ghz.

From the initial benchmarks that seems to be about right, on high detail the card was only pushing in the 20's for framerate.

Also keep in mind the Nvidia cards will outperform ATI in Doom 3.

The XT uses a higher core voltage (1.8v) so apparently the flash to XT raises this voltage from the stock 1.7v on the Pro.

I can't confirm this, but its just what I have heard.

It may be why they clock higher stock.

GPUs hits around 50-60C at stock cooling, mine is a very very good setup for my VidCard and its goes around 35-40C at full load(its pretty amazing)

my 9800 np will hit XT speeds after being flashed to a pro, it now has tweakmonster RAMsinks and 3.3ns Samsung that goes to 390 and core goes to around 440, benchable up to 460 or so but get dots. From temp probe on back of card it reads 45c idle rising to 50 very highest and thats on the back of the card!! (arctic silver 3 on core)
As soon as my maze RBX comes I will try drill out my coolermaster aero 7 + and put it on to hopefully reduce those temps but obviously take off the rediculous fan, PCI slots can be good :P

    Not mine

The xt is obiviously better as people have stated above, however paying $700 for it when the pro is $500 at this point in time is pretty foolish, UNLESS you are shooting to be the 'number one star'

Oh, and in that norwegian review/comparison, why did the 9800xt score so much higher in 3dmark2003? ..drivers? sneaky business, or is that card actually that much faster when it comes to dx9?
