EVGA SR-2 CPU support Quad i7s?

    This could be stupid but..

does the ebga sr-2 mobo support the i7 920, or i7 930?? or any of the quad cores?

    or just the 6core cpu?

    thanks

the board only supports xeon chips, not standard desktop chips. so even though a i7-980X is a 6 core chip, you still cant use it with the mobo

edit: in case you're wondering the reason, it's because desktop parts only have 1 QPI link, you need a dual QPI link chip for the two chips to communicate

It supports quad's yes, but only Xeons. You can't slap two 920's / 930's in there as they only have a single QPI link. Xeon's have two, one to 'talk' to the other CPU and another for the chipset. You need to use something like a X5550

I'm no expert, just what I've read over the past few months.

    Edit: Curse my slow typing
    Omoikane - 920 @ 4.1 w/ x 2 460 14hrs weekdays, 24/7 weekends - WCG & GPUGRID
    Ikaros - Sossaman @ 2.0 /w 275 24/7 WCG & GPUGRID

WTS Quad socket gear. 8356's @ 2.3 - No board T.T No use

OK so the x5550 has the same performance as the core i7 920 correct? just the one labeled "XEON" has that dual QPI.
and so the X5550 will work with the SR-2 mobo?

    Thanks

edit:: Woah wtf, the x5550 is sooo expensive compared to the i7 920 and i7 930.
I havent been in the cpu loop for a while, but back when the i7 920 came out, the equivalent was the W3520 bloomfield 45nm and was the same price as the i7 920..
whats the deal with these newer more expensive chips??
EDIT2:: OK so after reading some more, only the Gainstown(45nm) and Gulftown(32nm) CPUs that have 2x QPI will work with this mobo?

X5550 is the last gen, it is 45nm, but you can still use it on SR-2. The new 32nm X56xx (6-cores) or E56xx (4-cores) would be the best on a SR-2.

They are expensive because they have double-CPU capability.

    OK look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...22_.2845_nm.29

    and here:

Notice these are all 2 x QPI CPUs. so techincally they would all work with this mobo??

Yep, all those 2 x QPI CPUs would work on SR-2 piratically, but you should go for the new 32nm (Westmere) since they cost almost the same, but are much better than last generation 45nm (Nehalem).

    EDIT:
Here is the list of sported CPUs that you can find on EVGA site:

    Nehalem
    Xeon E5540 - 2.53 GHz
    Xeon X5550 - 2.66 GHz
    Xeon E5506 - 2.13 GHz
    Xeon L5506 - 2.13 GHz
    Xeon L5520 - 2.26 GHz

    Westmere
    Xeon E5620 - 2.40 GHz
    Xeon X5650 - 2.80 GHz
    Xeon X5660 - 2.80 GHz
    Xeon X5670 - 2.93 GHz
    Xeon X5680 - 3.33 GHz
    Xeon X5667 - 3.06 GHz
    Xeon X5677 - 3.46 GHz

    Yeah, just what i thought.
Probably gonna go with the Westmere Gulftown, as the prices are the same.

But i am wondering, what is the performance like for lets say Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz, and Xeon E5620 2.4Ghz? which one will perform better in games for example. Core for core.

    Thanks

OK so can someone show me a comparison between core i7 920(or similar) and the Gulftown 32nm Quad cores...
i wanna see the gains/losses and maybe clock for clock as the core i7 920s are 45nm and older nahalem tech.

    thanks

For quadcores, go with nahalem, for Hexacores westmere or gulftown. The current 32nm quads (very limited offering) offer no advantages over the 45nm quads and they are alot more expensive.
