I want to convert my air conditioner into a cpu cooler.

What's the best thing I can do? Can anyone point me to some helpful stuff to read?

    Thanks mates

It's 50,000 BTUs btw. And obviously I am going to hang out here and read various things but a guide would be nice.

    EDIT: 6,500 BTU

Probably 5,000 I guess, it's just a small a/c unit, does like 160 sq. feet or something......might even be 6500BTU.

    edit: guide please.

edit: here you go.......thanks a lot!

ohhhedit again: that's not actually quite a guide. But I think there may be some here

I came across some info on bypassing the thermostat on the a/c unit to lower ambient temps. That may be a first step and see if that gets it done for you. Otherwise that link in the previous post may be the way to go

Right now I have my rad mounted on the front of the unit. I want to go a lot colder. I may try that though or something like it. I bought the a/c just for the pc anyways.

EDIT: question moved to Phase Change

One more picture with the unit tidied up a bit.

I didn't have to saw off the shaft, only removed the evap fan.

My a/c was built for this......with the evap feed lines at the top where I needed them for easy installation in my cooler. I got lucky.

    Thanks!

Here is a pic of how it will look....minus the snowy heap in the middle

It's going to look so clean without all those hoses. Going to run the 4890s on air awhile until I can get another pump. Then they will probably go back on plain old water. Unless I can figure a way to only chill the radiator a little bit. I don't want frost all over them too.......yet.

    no... you don't want frost

you need to insulate the water block

you will also need to insulate the tubes and the motherboard as well

I didn't do a very good job of insulating the motherboard and almost lost the motherboard

I insulated the hoses and am planning to insulate the board, and I guess it would actually be better to insulate the block too. Thanks for the idea.

But once I get the board completely insulated I can give her a test run. I just realized I have this sheet of high density blue 3/8" plyable styrofoam insulation. I have plenty to do like you did, that looks good. Also going to coat the board with Dragon-Skin.

Did you coat the motherboard at all?

OK it's installed and I don't have a digital thermometer installed so no accurate load temps. Software says it will not go below 5c....I shut the chiller off over an hour ago and it's only up to 9c now. I need to add a couple gallons of straight antifreeze because I think it is starting to gel up at the fittings when I go below the -25F the washer fluid is rated for. Temps started to go up a little so i shut it off and they went back down.

    Accurate load temps tomorrow.

Sounds like the temps went back away you tuned it off is because the load wasnt heating the coolant up. Sometimes the software freaks out and doesnt tell you the correct temp when you go subzero so maybe its that. how long and how low did you let your coolant get to before turning your comp on? Its best to get it as low as it goes before turning on. Hopefully your digital thermometer will give some nice numbers and show how quickly your system pulls down to temp
