60c is that it? Try Heaven with everything maxed. @ 1680*1050, 8xAA, 16xAF, tessellation on extreme @ 875/4300 1.1v my GPU hits 70c. I like to really stress my hardware to make sure its stable, but not torture it.

Yeah, the Direct CU is an awesome little cooler. I've been getting those temps with Furmark @ 1920x1080 32xMSAA. I'll give Heaven a blast tonight along with Vantage.

A single Asus Direct CU, MSI Cyclone or Gigabyte OC edition really wont get very hot.

They can be expected to be around 10 degrees cooler than the Palit and Gainward versions (which I dont like at all).

The big three motherboard companies are really making awesome graphics cards now.

Is that with a single card? Because my SLI only goes up to 77 degrees:

I had 4x AA, 16x AF, and Extreme Tesselation, but I accidentally chopped off some of the settings when print screening the results in a reduced window next to the afterburner settings .

I'll do those again with 8x AA and try get the screenshots right this time. The CPU is actually at 4209 Mhz.

The min FPS result really is surprising, it happened both times so I dont think its a fluke:

Just curious as to how you guys are testing your overclocked memory speeds on your cards? I understand locking up, crashing to desktop, artifacts are usually a core pushed too hard, but how are you guys testing your memory? What sorts of things should one watch out for to make sure the memory is overclocked successfully. I have mine at 1100mhz and it seems to be ok, but want to know in the long run what to expect if it isn't ok. Can pushing memory too hard damage it at all, even though there is no over volting of the memory chips themselves?

hey guys sorry for offtopic. which card would you suggest to buy ? the choices are 460/470/480 ? I see that 460 clocks high but is that sufficient enough for games like crysis ? right now I have evga gtx285 oc. just in case before you say google it I tell that I've done it already and still confused about what's a better choice.

Easily go for the MSI / Gigabyte / Asus in that order for preference.

The coolers that they use are very very good, and the PCBs are meant to be much higher quality.

I didnt read that you were actually asking for which card to get out of the 460 / 470 / 480 lol.

Easily the 460 SLI. The 470 / 480 are based on the G100 core, it is very power hungry, hot, and requires loud cooling and I really dont like it. The 460 is cool, much more efficient, silent if you get the advised models, and in SLI vastly outperforms the GTX 480.

If you want to watercool them, then you would need a reference board, the best quality for that would be the EVGA. From what I have seen, the Palit 460 is to be strongly avoided, I've seen people only manage 775 Mhz with 70+ degrees using just a single card, and heard complaints about whining noise. And I hear that Gainward PCBs are made by Palit too, they look the same and use similar cooling so I wouldnt advise buying one of those either.

MSI / Asus / Gigabyte / EVGA, you really cant go wrong with those.

Just tried modded BIOS, it seems didn't scale anymore upto 1.125v. I dont know if it's the heat issue, the core temperature never past 60C on running 3D.

I think I'm going to mod the MOSFET heatsink on my 460, sand the standoffs down so I can use proper TIM instead of a pad. Naturally it'll make much better contact then as well. Could be why I can't pass 900MHz GPU atm too.

Here is the highest stable run I have done so far @ 1.087v
    Palit Sonic 1gb , 950 core ,1050 mem ,mcw80 waterblock
btw, what program are you guys using to get a full screen capture. Fraps only seems to capture the highlighted program.

Just curious as to how long you feel furmark should run before you consider the card stable? I see you have gone for 10 mins which is roughly how long I go for, but am wondering if it should be longer? I know a really flakey overclock will fail within mere minutes if it isn't stable, but is 10 mins long enough?

No, I would not feel comfortable calling it stable after 10 min. Before that I ran Heaven, dirt2 BM and 3d mark 06. My room that I was in was getting very warm (89f) so I stopped it there. I ran 3dmark again directly after that and while it ran through I did see some sparkles, so i figure my vregs or mem were getting to darn toasty. I will do another session at night when I can regulate to room temp a little better. The gpu never went over 40c so hopefully a little better cooling of the rest of the card might get me a little higher. Or maybe I found the gpu limit. I think 30min of furmark and a 30min loop of 3dmark or a real game BM could be called "stable".

Thank you sir. I've been out of the "game" for awhile and find I need refresher courses on some things . Pretty sad for someone whose first build was a 486!!!

Good max temp for air. Those coolers work well. When you get to water you will really have fun. I have yet to go over 40c on water. Good luck and have fun.
