I'm about to pull the trigger on a GTX 460

I have a 4850 512mb that needs to be upgraded

Whats the best model, I have my cpu on water but I don't have the $$ to drop $500 on a water cooled card, $300 and under, might go with a 470 but I want something silent!

Its already working, I just had to select the option to enable voltage tweaking.

Palit gtx460 sonic 1gb. Nice because it has g92 style 2.1" x 2.1" mounting so a DD maze5 (~$45), and others will fit. Here's mine:

Absolutely not. Its a completely new chip.

    GTX 470 is G100, GTX 460 is G104.

I really dont like G100, the GTX 460 is much more efficient, cooler, and overall a great improvement to the Fermi architecture.

    power consumption

Ok I decided to run some gtx460 1gb power consumption tests. These were mesured with my dmm inline with the two 6pin PCIe power connectors, here are the results:

NOTE: This is the "real" actual power draw from the PCIe power connectors

    clocks are set at: 800/1600/2000

    Res is: 1680x1050

idle 2d windows desktop---------------------------------------------: 8.33 watts
Heaven (4x fsaa 16x ansiotropic normal tessellation OpenGL)---: 89.25 watts
    BC2 (1x fsaa / 16x ansiotropic everything high dx9)--------------: 81.37 watts
    Furmark stability testing--------------------------------------------: 128.52 watts

    Wow!!! Furmark is a beast!!!!!

    what model of gtx460 buy

hey guys, this is my first comment in the forum so uh i just wanted to share a doubt with you and maybe you can help me solve it...

i'm really confuse about how to control voltage on GTX460s.. how this thing of VID work? you just change the bios and voltage will change together? or even doing a biosmod the voltage wouldn't change? EG: would a cyclone bios fit in a reference card?

im going to buy one of these (CLICK), but i don't know which one to pick, asus top, palit platium, msi cyclone or anyother pcb-reference... can you please help to choose? would be great if i got your help...

with MSI Afterburner 1.6.1 ALL OF THESE (CLICK) cards can have their voltage controlled? if not, which of them can have the voltage controlled, and why some can't if the pcb looks equal? does the PCB reference cards can? i know that MSI CYLONE and PALIT PREMIUM can.. also know the CYCLONE would be a great deal, would the PALIT PREMIUM be too?

in your personal opnion what is the best GTX460-1GB to buy between those in the link and WHY? which of them should i buy? which one is better for overclocking? which one has the highest voltage raise capability? which one is theoretically capable of 900 on core, with soft voltmod of course? the price also counts..

i mean some of them use regular pcbs but the I/O connections r different, some did low modifications on the voltage system, some did high modification on voltage system, some have whole the pcb high modificated, and some have the real reference pcb...

i know that is alot of questions but i am really needing help, cuz i'm lost i just don't know what card to buy, they r all so different..

really apologize for this avalanche of questions, but that's why the forum exists right? to solve doubts..

anyway thank you so much in advance

Are you cooling on air or water? Best for air right now seems like MSI/ASUS/PALIT/GIGABYTE.. You flash a modified BIOS onto your card , then you can control voltage with afterburner, you still can over volt the cards without flashing your BIOS but you will have more voltage with a modified BIOS and raise your core clocks etc. There is a GTX Database where Ket has a list of modified BIOS files that you can use to flash pending on what brand you go with.

    Hey Canino,

I'm quite happy with the sonic platinum of palit. It's one of the fastest out of the box (800mhz default) and overclocks decent (runs stable at 900mhz in my case, and 4200 memories. Another very good card is the KFA GTX460 EX OC 1gb which has 810 default. All of them can be overvolted up to the same voltage with afterburner which is 1.087 limited. If you are not in a hurry, wait to see if MSI releases th GTX460 1gb HAWX. It's non reference and has better voltage regulation which allows it to hit 1ghz in overclock (all the others top at around 880-920mhz without modded bios that allows to overvolt higher).

i would be cooling it with the stock cooler... thank you for refering to the GTX Database, i found it, actually is pretty useful

about the 460 HAWK, well i found some information here.. seems like it need 1.2v for 1Ghz.. i am not in a hurry actually, but what really worries me is the price... this HAWK models always have their price SUPER-inflateds.. what price u think it's going to be? a guess it will be around US$300..

All cards so far are reference, none is non reference. The Hawx is the only one I know non reference, I don¡'t think will be that expensive, but for sure more expensive. However add to the fact that it will have a much better cooler compared to all others. If you add the expense to change cooler later on then you get to the same price. This is just speculation, we must only wait and see when they actually come out.

They can all be overvolted to the same amonunt without modded bios using afterburner, however not all reach 900mhz. Make sure you get a 1gb version and one of the factory boosted ones that have default speed 750-810 mhz, not the 675mhz versions.

well the PALIT SONIC have a complete different PCB, the MSI CYCLONE has one component of the voltage system changed and also the I/O connections r different from the reference.. ASUS TOP has changed the locations and of some components in system voltage.. well these are all official non-reference cards..

as far as i know we can call "reference card/pcb" only the ones which are completely equal as the NVIDIA ones.. isn't that right?

but is good to know that all of them can get overvolted and reach ~900 on core...

PS: i got no rush cuz i still got my GTX480, after staying with it couple weeks i saw that this CPU even on 3.6Ghz is not enough for the GF100... GTX480 is to much hungry, needs a super processor like i5/i7 to give"release" all it's power.. so i decided to downgrade and get a GTX460..

My target for today was 1GHz and finally we got it

We used a GTX 460 768MB card with a modified BIOS and a aquagraFX 460 block for the card. Water temperature was 39°C since the fans were running very slow.

In Furmark it was running stable but every few seconds there were some hardly noticeable glitches so it can't be used for regular work or gaming. But hey: it was a nice feeling to see the 1GHz running

Since 1GHz is is an enhancement of only 48.1% we pushed it a bit further to 1012.5MHz which equals to 50% But with that clock the glitches were more visible so I stopped here to avoid any damage. The system and card was running fine. We experienced no crash here.

Shoggy- what BIOS did you use for you card? Was it from the database that Ket modified or you have your own file ? By the way nice specs , could u push more voltage or that was it? Also could you pass Vantage with those OCed specs? Thank you

I've applied the new Gigabyte F2 bios on my card with the unlocked fan settings and now(fan maximum) i could reach 900 Mhz in Vantage, with Physics on i finally broke the 20k limit:
