Intel plans to deliberately limit Sandy Bridge overclocking

Information provided by Intel in its own presentations about its upcoming mainstream LGA1155 Sandy Bridge CPUs appears to confirm the company has designed the CPUs to deliberately limit overclocking.

According to one Taiwanese motherboard company, on a Sandy Bridge system, the fact that all the busses are linked means that turning up the Base Clock by just 5MHz caused the USB to fail and SATA bus to corrupt.
rofl, this reminds me of the old days of athlon xp. seems more like a step backwards than forwards. however, we'll have unlocked multiplier, so overclocking will still be possible (more than the claimed 5%), but we won't be able to tweak the setups to the maximum.
this is like with pc games. they used to be packed with everything one needed and fully customizable, and now everything is stripped-down for casual gamers/enthusiasts

i really hope there'll be a workaround or smth, as oc'ing via multiplier only would be pretty unspectacular lol, especially for a large amount of people here at xs.

Yeah found this out tomorrow, if this is the case im sticking with bulldozer, Something about limiting the DMI or something.. this is total bs though, taking away the one thing which intel has been rocking the last decade!

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

When they have a million CPU sitting in newegg warehouse not selling along with the mobo's they will be pressured. Or the will have OC version to sell to us for a higher price.

We are talking about upcoming mainstream LGA1155 Sandy Bridge CPUs, not the high-end which comes later.

It is a natural move if Intel try yo to limit the OC of mainstream to prevent a direct competition with hight end. I guess that's the lesson Intel has learned from i7, when we all bought a sub $300 920 and OCed it to beat the $1000 975.

or since the consumer SB is a downgrade to the current 1156 no1 will upgrade for the few watts of power saving. or the unlcoked chip will be around $300-350 like it is now, but i think that the main thing is that the 1156 is faster than the 1366 clock for clock core for core and they cannot let that happen again and they need to milk money out people.

im not sure on how well this would work, as others said this will move people to amd as intel is not so fast that a stock intel can beat an overclocked amd, and second this would be vary unstable as base clock swing on the cheap board or with some bioses can be +-5mhz and most are +-2mhz on the low end so this will mess up alot of things unless there is a multi set for each buss like the socketA days. i had no problems then with the core clock (and the mod to unlock the multi wasnt bad ether)

So there will only be LGA1155 dual channel DDR3 + Sandy bridge-E LGA2011 quad channel? No more triple?

Some where speculating on problems with OCing RAM on Nehalem, and issues with using 2v+ RAM on new system, I remember. All was a part of new and better 3-channel architecture, but those who didn't understand it at that time were making negative scores on it.

this is bs... intel didnt do this deliberatly, and they didnt do it to make more money either...
they didnt think it matters, the top guys in charge are out of touch with the retail market and couldnt be further away from the enthusiast community and couldnt care less about it... those are business men and if the big system builders who intel makes hundreds of millions of us$ with, tell them to cut down the cost as much as possible, then thats what they do... none of them requested good overclocking so why should intel spend a single transistor in their budget on this? its as easy as that...
