    Memory for AM3 CPU

I am looking to go for a new AMD build in the near future but have been wondering what is best for AM3 or if it matters that much what kind of memory you use. Is the speed of the memory the most important or is it cas latency. I haven't done a personal pc build since my 939 3200+ single core system. Is there a happy medium spot to shoot for or whats the most important? I am not a big overclocker most of the time and that won't be a major focus of my next build. kind of going best bang for buck with this next build.

You can get by with 1200 5-5-5-15 without having too much a bottleneck however DDR3-1600 CAS 7-ish is recommended.

Anything higher than 1333 with CAS 7 or lower. 1333 CAS 7 being absolute lowest.

i thought i had read online that amd processors ran better with lower cas or with higher speeds i can't remember which. but it seems like i read that the cpu's responded better one way better than the other. maybe i am wrong.

That may have been back during the release of C2 revision Phenom II's. They were limited to 1333mhz ram, I believe it had something to do with their memory controller. And so it was better to tighten timings than try to oc ram clock speeds.

gotcha that makes sense. good to know. just wanted to make sure what was important. it would suck to buy ram that couldn't of worked as good as something else for close to the same price.

    Hey doxology83,

I'm pretty happy with this kit for $113:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226122

Heres a thread where I did some pretty extensive testing with them:
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=253789

They're very flexible as far as timimgs and clocks go, and for the non-hardcore bencher I'm not sure you can beat the bang for the buck factor...

The G.Skill Ecos, use the same IC's and are a bit cheaper.
I mainly bought the Mushkins because it's an employee owned US company with good support (plus I liked the look better )...

Here's a link for the G.skills if you need to save a few bucks:

    The Mushkin Enhanced are great.
    The G.Skill Ripjaws are great.

DDR3 1600 should give you ample breathing room.

    If you want to make sure memory will never be the bottleneck and have a few extra bucks to spare;

The G.Skill DDR3 2000 kits (either Ripjaw or Trident) series offer serious performance and work great if you want tight timings at DDR3 1600, or looser timings up to DDR3 2000 and above.

I've been really Enjoying my Mushkin Redlines I had to set the timings manually but they're rocking at 6-8-6-24 1600 which is pretty great.

I'd prefer the Ripjaws 1600 7-7-7 over those, I believe they are last stock BBSE, should do a tad better than PSC (Redlines,Blacklines, blue ripjaws I believe)

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

The Cas 7 Dominator GT 4 gig dual channel kits are pretty good as well as relatively inexpensive considering they come with a fan.

That is DEFINATELY NOT inexpensive...for what you get.

He'd be better off with these:
    http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=...nel-Memory-kit

    Would do 2100 7-7-7 with ease...1750 6-6-6-18?...

It IS relatively inexpensive for Corsair, seeing as their cheapest Elpida Hyper kit was $270.

    +1.

Gigabyte and ASRock seem to be behind in memory clocking, I was able to squeak out 1960 (unstable) from my 89TD pro but my 890GX gigabyte board has a wall at 1880.

sweet info guys thanks. i did read something weird yesterday that said it looks like ram prices where going to go down because everyone has switched to cheaper processes for the ram which are cheaper to make. i found that interesting because everything else i have read has said that ram prices where expected to rise rest of the year. i have noticed ddr3 going down in price. makes me want to wait a little bit and see if they drop a little. i could either save a couple of bucks or it could help me get something better for cheaper.

Perfect Storm kits were Elpida hyper chips. They might be very hard to find now... So GS Flare and ECO/Mushkin RedLine or some other PSC chips maybe a better and cheaper choice.

Yep. So this new Perfect Storm should be the same chips as Flare series, but they were to be Elpida hypers before...which are very hard to find now...
