    Ubuntu or Windows 7?

    Hello hello!

I just got my new system in today! I've been seriously considering Ubuntu for a while, and I was wondering what your all's opinions are.

    Asus KGPE-D16
    AMD Opteron 6172 x2
    EVGA GTX 480 x2
    G.Skill DDR3-1333 24GB
    Samsung 2TB drive x4
    Corsair 32GB SSD

I plan on crunching, folding, some gaming, transcoding, etc.

    What do you think?

    Thanks!

linux dosnt play most games without emulation then that is slow, for crunching linux is a good chunk faster

Nope, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look that hard.

I had trouble installing flash for firefox.

Xubuntu was having alot of issues while Ubuntu worked pretty smooth. I liked Xubuntu's interface a lil better.

You can do all of that with ubuntu specially transcoding (but there is a limitation on gaming)

But could you please tell me whats your reason to buying this rig for your plan?!

For gaming? Bad idea. For general desktop usage, *nix is fast and can be fun when it forces you to learn new things, and for crunching and folding the lower overhead results in better returns.

Its not that bad. Takes about 20 min to install Ubuntu 10 and then a while for all the updates n stuff. But I suggest getting a book on Ubuntu...But the community is pretty big and there is alot of documentation =)

Get Windows 7 simply for the gaming but try an Ubuntu live CD to see if you like it and if you do go Dual boot.

Depending on what games you plan on playing; Ubuntu (Or any linux distro for that matter) is fine if you don't expect to play the latest PC games. However Windows 7 64bit is rather good. [the 32bit version is a bad copy]

If you are into games then it has to be Windows.

For anything serious, where control over everything is paramount then choose Linux. Ubuntu is a good introduction.
For the sheeple there is Microsoft.

As ReverendMaynard said; dual boot. But install Windows first!!

I boot between Ubuntu, XP and Windows 7 depending on where *I* want to go today.

Ubuntu is a good start but for skilled Linuxusers bullsh1t ;D
Its just a GUI and you know NOTHING what you are doing on your system
get something real like gentoo or archlinux if you plan on learning it. ubuntu will learn you n o t h i n g because its only click click

but your request: gaming ------> WINDOWS(latest games, done emulate them, not fast enough and bugged and so on bla bla)
if you want to try out linux install win7 FIRST and then your fav. linux distro, otherwise bootmanagerchaos(you CAN fix but.. you know)

Just switched to ubuntu from Win7 Enterprise ( I didn't install it, it's my work place laptop) and I feel slightly embarrassed why I didn't do this before. Ubuntu can do anything Win7 can and I am really impressed by the community support. Ubuntu (or any other current Linux distribution) is more than adequate for everyday desktop usage (email, office etc). However, seeing that you have 2 480 gtxes I wouldn't recommend it since you won't get support for many games.

My main complaints so far are:
    Flash for Firefox
Integrated cam won't work with skype
No support for MSN or Yahoo (kinda make sense).
Other than that, it is simply great.

I really like Ubuntu but I wouldn't put it on my gaming PC

The reason I did try ubuntu out was because I got a free laptop. But everything was in danish and I didn't want to pay for a reinstall so I installed ubuntu. It takes some time to get used to but overall you should try it

Just a heads up, Valve ported their Source engine for Mac / Linux.

So the whole "Linux does not do games" thing could very well be out of the picture, VERY soon
