    Talking Overkill home networking?

Ok, i found a true bargain deal from local computer store, used 1U network switches for 25€/piece.
There was couple of normal 100Base-TX switches, between 16-48 ports but there was one 24p 1000T-Base switch! Like i could resist, over half krand switch going for mere pocket money.

Ok the switch is HP Procurve 2824 J4903A, and it seems to work, console responds, web gui works, works as gate way. Only thing i don't like about the switch is that it has 3 40mm fans

I'll add some pictures in a minute.

    bad angle.

Hehe yepp, those fans are quite noisy. So i'll A, get those little adapters that lower fan voltage or B, get entirely new fans or C something between

I need to test does that switch even boot with one or more fans missing.

Haha that'll cost a arm and a leg... About half a million is not that far away :P

I think i'll place this next to ADSL modem and get cheap 5p 1000Base-T swich to my room, this way this setup isn't so overkill =P

There's some interesting setup options in this switch, set ports on/off, manage and limit they speed (possible to set ethernet connection to 10Base-T etc), Virtual Lan, it'll report anykinda crc errors in connection and such.

This thing rocks ecept for power comsumtion, it's around 50W :x

It's not overkill unless you're going for 10G connections in your home.

It's not overkill if it gets the job done. Then it's "just-enough-kill"

    Making new cover for procurve.
Still need to sand it alot and add 2x 120mm fan holes there :P

And don't mind the color of that plexi, only picked it because that was dirt cheap. 1.5x2m piece did cost like 10e.

Does this houses internets haring between computers and maintaining gigabit lan, nothing fancier

And here's the final product :]

    Cool and silent.
