FYI went from 6gb to 12gb with no loss of OC or mem freq

    Just an FYI

Today I bought a second set of G.Skill Pi series 6gb (3x2gb) kit to go with the one I already had. I wasn't sure about the outcome of going to 12gb. I didn't know if it would affect my OC or max stable settings.

Initally after installing the additional 6gb at my 24/7 settings the bios would only detect 8gb of memory, that got me worried. But after reading a thread posted by eva2000 (aka "the memory guru") over at i4memory I changed my CAS and RAS timings to 8-8-8-24-1t and everything was rocking and rolling again.

So, just to let everyone know that is thinking of adding another set of memory modules to their i7 mb it shouldn't affect your OC. I had to take my timings from 7-8-7-24-1t (G.Skill XMS default) to 8-8-8-24-1t at the same ram speed and uncore.

well i guess going from 7-8-7-24-1t to 8-8-8-24-1t is a loss of OC in a way, or loosening the timing (depends on how you look at it). but i know this won't even matter at all unless you look closely at benchmarks. btw, what are you using the rig for to need 12gb of memory?

    Performance loss, not OC

I didn't mind having to loosen up the timings, what I didn't want was to loose my OC and have to run at 3.6-4ghz. LOL

Hi Major, so what your saying here is that if you go from 6gb to 12gb is that your not able to run the default timmings, right? So how did you find your new timmings?

Well that's good to know you only had to loosen your timings. It was inevitable that something was going to be impacted, but at least the loss isn't bad at all. Methinks I'm gonna go to 12GB after I get an SSD, a Fermi-based card... yeah probably sits third place on my list haha. With this much memory... I could run more virtual machines? (You would think running 2 VM's with 2GB a piece would be more than enough for any sane man) I don't really need the memory for much else...

in b4 ATI fanboys, I'm waiting for a major/backend rev before considering a Fermi so don't start ranting on how it's too expensive, uses too much power, produces too much heat, etc., you're preaching to the choir. I just see architectural promise in the chip.
I do this stuff for a living... it sorta takes the fun out of it.
