    Core 2 Quad's

Hm, after not having gotten any offers after posting my WTB ad, I'm going to ask here. Anyone want to find me two C2Q's? I've got an Abit IP35-E that supports Kentfields or Yorkfields, and a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 that supports Kentsfields. As of this very moment, they're running a Wolfdale (E6300) and Allendale (E2140), respectively.

The Giga P965 is a 24/7 cruncher running Ubuntu 9.04 x64 and the Abit P35 is currently my main.

    My toys:

I wish I had something to offer you. My quads are currently in use. I have an Allendale that I will add to the next XS WCG Giveaway (scheduled to begin December 1, 2010). I had 2 of the Abit IP35 series (pro) that I ran for awhile, and they are solid boards; too bad they are out of biz.

Hmmm add my name to that hat LOL, I'mma poor cruncher but I think I got something I can toss in tell me the rules
but anyway to answer the persons' original question
pricewatch.com, I've seen good prices on quadcores the Q9400 is like 170, the Q8400 like 150 and there are some cheaper ones' all depends on what fsb your boards can handle and how your memory control is in the bios what would be worth it for ya.
Q6600 can be had for 145 bucks the steppings at starmicro tend to be crappy, and I would go 4 45nm cpu's as is, however call the peeps first starmicro tends to be willing to tell you what they got cpu number wise their qx9650 warning is a 7xxB199 and trust me I couldn't get it past 3.6ghz. lucky one of the temp diodes was stuck so I had an excuse to rma without paying the 20% restocking fee.
Anyways there are also other cheap vendors out there. and well just check it out

Yorks should be easy to find no? I was considering one a while back and opted to wait for Sandy Bridge, if you have a Micro CEnter near you you can even get it cheaper...

Q84's are everywhere. Here's how I decide what CPU to run where...

    E6300 2.8 @ 3.8 = 1000x2x1.1 = 2200
    E2140 1.6 @ 3.2 = 1600x2 = 3200
    "Kentsfield" 2.4 @ 3.2 = 800x4 = 3200
    "Yorkfield" 2.66 @ 3.6 = 940x4x1.1 = 4136

If I can afford both IP35-Pro's and C2Q's, then every board will have a suitable home. Worst case scenario is I end up with a Yorkfield in my IP35-E and a Kentsfield in the Giga P965. Assuming I can't yet revive the Asus P5B Deluxe, I'd grab a pair of Foxconn R10-G3 barebones and run the Wolfdale if not the Allendale as well in those. Wolfdale has a 10% advantage over Allendale when crunching. I've also gotta grab more HSF's. If I get a Kents and stick it under my Mugen-1, I'd stick the Yorkfield under an S963 or something.

Well, I'm also looking for hard drives. SATA preferred. Laptop or desktop--it doesn't really matter.

The more hard drives, the more Windows installations. The more Windows installations, the more points. The more points, the bigger my epeen.

I've actually been closely considering Athlon II X4's; they supposedly draw less than a Kentsfield and net more points (plus you can find cheap AMD boards & X4's for like $120-150).

<$130 for an Athlon II X4 2.8GHz and an 880G motherboard.

Clock-for-clock, I'm pretty sure they run right with the Kentsfields, and ~3.4ghz is pretty easy to get on one, even on a cheap board.

A very good deal for PPD/$, although i7 systems do have appeal (less rigs to deal with)

That's cheaper than picking up a Q6600 for my current (and only) 775 system that has the C2D e7400 in it right now. Hmm...

A stock 2.8GHz Athlon II X4 (1716 BOINC) will do more work than a stock 2.4GHz Kentsfield (1508.57 BOINC). It still loses out, slightly to Phenom II X4's (1848 at 2.8GHz). Even crappy boards can get Phenom II X4's to 3.6GHz+; I did it was complete ease on a Biostar 790GX board for a build. I literally set an OC preset and was off to the races. I actually have a modicum of trust for Biostar's presets, and it worked out well.

I had a $60 785G GB board that took a PhII X4 BE to 3.8ghz, I would think that surely it could do ~3+ on an AII X4

Well then. Unless I can get a C2Q for dirt, I'll leave the e7400 in there and save the money for an AMD... Which is ok, I'm an AMD guy anyway...
