    First Month

    Celebrating my first month of 24/7 crunching. I hit 20,000 BOINC points and I'm pretty excited. It isn't much but hey, I'm still happy.

    Thanks to everyone who gave me quick, helpful, and concise answers on all of my question threads when I first joins I know there were a lot of them.

    Put together a new dual core system for crunching from a bunch of old pieces... and a shiny new intel processor.

    Ok, don't laugh at this one My Main Rig is....drum roll please....
    - Pentium Dual Core E5200 overclocked to 3.2 Ghz
    - Asus PK5KPL/1600 motherboard
    - 4 GB RAM
    - Radeon 4760

    I'm considering upgrading to a Quad Core Q9400 here:
    http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=CPUITQ9400

    I don't have the cash for a full upgrade (i7 upgrade) but should be able to scrape together enough for this processor. What kind of difference do you think it will make?
    Thanks=[Pulsar]=

    E5200's are nice budget chips.. I once overclocked one to 4.3Ghz on stock air
    I guess you could crank it up to around 3,6Ghz 24/7

    Getting a Q9400 (and overclocking it) should pretty much double your WCG production.
    Although I am doubtful the mobo will hold up to an OCed Quad for long.. just had a look at the P5KPL/1600, the VRM does NOT look good. 3 phase analog with no cooling whatsoever, I fear you might blow up the board crunching 24/7 with a Quad. At the very least I would recommend to put some mosfet coolers on it.

    Maybe save up a bit more, and either go the AMD or S1156 route.

    Yeah I think the motherboard may be the problem. I've heard that the E5200 can go much higher but I seem to have problems above around 3.3 (with stock cooler). Above 3.3 I have random lockups and reboots, above around 3.4 the computer refuses to boot all.

    I did buy it on the cheap though
    Thanks=[Pulsar]=

    Unfortunately I'm underclocked due to some pretty severe heating issues. Keep on breaking 90c.

    Aha, I knew it. I was staring at my stats and in the last month there have been 15 day's with no output. I was scratching my head about and the kid wanted to know why I was messing with the junk computer in the corner for. Oh ya, his buddy has been gaming on it in the evenings, and turning Boinc off, and forgetting to turn it back on when he's done.
