ASUS ARES Cooler detailed (the real cooler)

Got some :banana::banana::banana: for you. This is the actual retail cooler ASUS ARES will have. All previous coolers have been prototypes or mocks.

ASUS ARES will be a graphics card extraordinaire. Even if the two Cypress GPUs, the custom PCB and 4 Gigabyte GDDR5 memory buffer is impressive by itself the cooler is what makes it really stand out. The pure weight of the cooler is striking. The card weighs nearly 3.5 kilo (7.8 lbs.) and the development of the cooler was actually the most time and resource consuming part of the making the card.

The cards we've seen pictured up until now have used an older cooler, but we now have exclusive pictures of the cooler that will be used by retail cards. Other pictures have been prototypes, even those shown by ASUS before Computex. This is the real deal and it has not been shown before.

The cooler covers the whole card and all heat emitting components are in direct contact with the cooler. The graphics circuits are covered by extra large copper heatsinks.

The fan is size large and measures 105mm and will according to ASUS's own measurements offer 600% better airflow contra noise. In other words a lot more airflow and less noise than the reference cooler of Radeon HD 5970 (120 CFM at 37dB vs. 18 CFM and 44.5dB with HD 5970, ASUS' numbers).

The fan blows air over the two copper blocks and the smaller heatsinks of the aluminum profile. The copper heatsink above is in direct contact with the power circuits to keep them cool.

The casing steers the airflow and provides aesthetics for those that care about these things.

The full cover design stretches on to the back of the card where we find a big sturdy aluminum plate.

Here too all heat emitting components, primarily the memory circuits, are in direct contact with the cooler.

The two beefy copper blocks each have four heatpipes and these are the heaviest objects of the collection. If we are to believe ASUS it improves the efficiency of the cooler.

Price and launch date is still pending, but we will return when we know more.

good thing it isn't a one GPU card, it would probably snap the card.

the fan specs seem a little off. no way its going to get 120CFM unless its measured in an open bench. id like to see the end result measured, since this is a high pressure setup

3.5Kg... I'd like to see adjustable legs to keep the card still and parallel to the case floor. 3.5Kg will put pressure on the PCI-E slot and mobo. The only thing keeping it upright is the backplane screw to the case. I hope Asus dont skimp on the physical support

3.5kg?!? , that's heavy! It weights almost the same as a Les Paul with weight relief

By no means that card can be used in a standard tower case.

size alone makes it clear this is not for anything but open bench cases, dont even have to look at the weight numbers

what cases can even fit this thing? its an inch or so taller than the expansion slots, and then it has power cords up there aswell. gonna need 8" from mobo to window to hold it

.. and if you didn't play well enough you could at least kill your opponent via hitting him with 7 kg of copper.
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks

Atleast this card looks like a thousand dollar card. It looks ridiculous. But it sounds too heavy, you probably should sign a waiver before you install this thing.

That fan sounds too good to be true those, if they could make a fan that quiet at that many cfm, they should sell the fan as there would be a whole lot of people willing to buy it.

I wonder if this will be classified as a lethal weapon?

im about to finally put in a sig with a list of reasons why to get this card

    • Its the only card that voids the warranty for your motherboard, case, and the transformer of your nearest phone pole.
    • Its classified as a deadly weapon (more than the gun case ever could be)
    • Illegal in CA and other "Green" states
    • Automatically triggers you for an IRS tax audit
    • Your wife gets to say "thats what she said" anytime you talk about it

The basic design of this cooler is not new, Asus used it for their 7800gt dual:
