NVIDIA Removes Restriction on ATI GPUs with NVIDIA GPUs Processing PhysX

NVIDIA has reportedly removed the driver-level code which restricts users from having an NVIDIA GeForce GPU process PhysX with an ATI Radeon GPU in the lead, processing graphics. Version 257.15 Beta of the GeForce drivers brought about this change. Possible commercial interests may have played NVIDIA's previous decision to prevent the use of GeForce GPUs to process PhysX with ATI Radeon GPUs, where users could buy an inexpensive GeForce GPU to go with a high-end DirectX 11 compliant Radeon GPU, thereby reducing NVIDIA's margins, though officially NVIDIA maintained that the restriction was in place to ensure Quality Assurance. The present move also seems to have commercial interests in mind, as NVIDIA could clear inventories of GeForce GPUs at least to users of ATI Radeon GPUs. NVIDIA replenished its high-end offering recently with the DirectX 11 compliant GeForce 400 series GPUs.

I'd say it's a good move, they know in the end it's worth nothing cutting your own technology, it will only hurt your sales.

I'd be wary of them disabling the feature again in the future, after people have bought G92s.

Sounds crazy, but I wouldn't put it past them to pull a fast one.

After seeing how they have gone about things recently I'm not sure they'd care, as long as they unloaded some cards first. Driver level restrictions should have never exisited in the first place. I miss you old school awesome nvidia.

I can call you a troll too. You need to get real. Go back and read it again. People who want to use ATI with Nvidia for Physx game support are not "a huge number of customers".

That decision is a no brainer, ATI currently has most of DX11 market thanks to nvidia delay, so someone who has a 5870 already won't jump a Fermi for physX...

    Bwahahaha.

Still waiting to hear back from nVidia fanbois who were defending the previous restrictions - "they can't allow ATi cards to work as well, they'll have a QC nightmare and it'll cause all sorts of bugs!". Oh, how the worm has turned.

Actually, the main concern was and still is, that ATI might break this by mistake or on purpose. IIRC someone reported, that it already happened once with Catalyst 10.2 I think.

Nice. Now PhysX will get all standardized and every game will use it. Those who already have Nvidia won't have to worry too much for a second card ?

Most of those games are running on an engine that has Physx & accelerated Support but most of then don't use or implement accelerated Physx at all.

NVIDIA will be reinstating the restriction in the WHQL build of these drivers, and presumably all drivers thereafter.
