    Reference HD 5770's

    Hello,

Market seems to be flooded with non-reference 5770's, but since im planning to go water I need a reference 5770 which will be compatible with this EK water block. Also wanted voltage control out of the box, hence was looking for the MSI and ASUS 5770's with the reference design but they are out of stock everywhere, and they have been replaced with crappy non-reference ones. Now I know there are a few reference sapphire 5770's, but even those are becoming rare. XFX seems to be sticking to the reference design im if not miskaken. Also, all V1 and V2 coolers should be based on the reference design?

Theres also this version of sapphire, and im not sure if its a reference design. I also hear about V3 versions not supporting voltage control. Wtf is V3? V1 to V2 only changed the cooler, ive never heard of V3. Is V3 just non-reference? Zzz

Basically, I need a 5770 which has a reference design and hence would fit the EK water block and can also be flashed to a msi/asus bios for voltage tweaking. I guess its the safest sticking to the V1 and V2 coolers from any manufacturer, since im guaranteed to get the reference design?

Forget about the 5770 and go straight to the 5830. They're 190 dollars on newegg. 5830 pulls on average 3K more points then a 5770 in vantage and doesn't have a memory bandwidth bottleneck like the 5770 does.

2x 5770's way better than 1 5830 and you can't find waterblocks for the 5830's. The 5770's in crossfire will toast any 5830 out there. Thats my 2cents

The 5830 is 30 dollars more then the 5770. It would be a mistake to buy two 5770's over 2 5830's

You can not watercool 5830's with full gpu blocks!! I'm thinking he wants to watercool his gpu's. And i would skip the 5830's and go with 5850's if it was my decsion. If you want good performance in the 5830 price range get some 4890's they out perform the 5830's all day. Went from 4890's to 5830's on three rigs and sent them back for 5850's due to the loss in performance from the 4890's. But two 5770's in crossfire cost as much as one 5850. But, it is his choice not ours. I don't think he will be disappointed with 5770's

Lightspeed, Do you have the 5770 waterblocks already? The EK 5770 blocks are sweet look'in!!!

You don't need to watercool 5770's as they will never even touch a stock clocked 5830 even when overclocked to 1.1Ghz. Tell me again WHY you would want a 5770 over a 5830 thats 30 dollars more?

    Stock Clocked 5770 :

    Stock Clocked 5830 :

    1.1Ghz 5770 :

    5830 in Xfire :

    5830 in Trifire :

5830 was tested on stock beta drivers which IMO was a piece of beyond belief.

Vantage score is good, if you care about benching.

    Gaming...2 x 5770's >= 5870 overall.

My two Sapphire 5770 Vapor-X's @ 1050/1445 1.34v pull 22k in Vantage just to throw that out there.

My Xfire results were on stock clocks.

    Thanks for the replies guys

Found a few reference powercolor 5770's for a decent price, I guess ill just get them and flash to a MSI/ASUS bios. Only question that remains is that are all the egg shaped coolers based on the reference design?

Also, as Crazy V said, im going for the 5770's instead of the 5830 since I already have the EK waterblocks incoming for the 5770. Also, the 5830's are around £45 more than the 5770's, and I'd rather have a watercooled 5770 instead of a stock 5830 for roughly the same price. The 5830 would probably be faster but its more fun watercooling and tweaking a 5770

edit: Zeus, was the 5770's memory overclocked too at the 1.1ghz score? They usually respond better to a memory overclock than a core oc, since they are bandwidth starved

    @ Hey Zeus

I know the 5830's were at stock clocks

But just thought I'd throw a result in since there was no 5770 crossfire result. I run my 5770's at 8x 8x so 16x 16x like on 890FX would be a good 4-5% faster...More like 23k.

    1920x1080.

I would reckon 1100/1400 should be doable under water, and that would perform similarly to a 5830 in games. I know a 5830 can be overclocked as well, and I would get more performance for the same price. Hmm...now im thinking if I should return the EK blocks but man they are sexy and I want my GPU under water.

    At 1920x1080 you won't need the 5830's.

At 1050/1400 24/7 on water you won't need any more.

If you DID return the EK blocks, go for two Swiftech MC whatever GPU blocks. MCW60 or something and cover the VRM's and ram with really beefy Aluminum or Copper sinks. You'll be suprised that those would cool better than a full cover.

Why? Is it because there isnt enough contact/pressure between the RAM/VRM and the cooler?

I snagged a used ref 5770 for 140 shipped. IMO Xfire 5770's are the best bang for your buck atm period if you can get them in the 140-150 range.

What are your VRM and core temps with the 5770's w/ EK waterblock?

There is almost no flow there, it's directed 90% over the core. What you end up with is a slab of metal and no airflow. Little aluminum ramsinks can keep my 5770's GDDR5 at no more than 60c with no airflow, and I've seen results that look worse. (VRM's hitting 110c, RAM hitting 90c etc)

I highly disagree. My 5770's with EK fullcoverblocks ran impressively cool, no stick on ramsinks around that will beat that.

Once you open up the block you will see it ain't 90% directed over the core, not with EK fullcovers!

The downside is that the memory on the backside of the card have no additional cooling, just like with the stock cooler but i never felt like i needed that.

Because EK designs quality products. Thumbs up to them

On a side note, what kind of temps are you guys with fullcover blocks getting? On my Vapor-X cards @ 965/1400 stock voltage my temps are around 29c-30c idle and 51-53c load (furmark) for both my cards.

I'm not sure why but i feel that those temps are REALLY high. When i had my watercooled 470. Even at 1.087v and max overclock it would only get to 50C while playing BC2.

I think his Vapor-X 5770's are on air. I might be mistaken though
