NVIDIA GTX 480M "Fermi for laptops"

"We had an inkling NVIDIA wouldn't keep the Fermi goodness just to the desktop and here's our first pseudo-official confirmation. Rushing in ahead of any announcements, Eurocom has started listing a GeForce GTX 480M part, replete with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and a $345 markup relative to ATI's Mobility Radeon HD 5870"

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/02/n...une-crazy-pow/

100W TDP really last i recall 5870M had like 50-60w TDP. But then again mobile 5870 is equal to a 5770 in desktop world i wonder how powerful the 480M really is.

    I was thinking the same.

I recall than something similar happen back in its time when there were a few Prescott infected Notebooks. Who knows what the hell these people are thinking about.

So this is a separately designed chip? Can this mean we can see other separately designed chips (aka GF104 -> GTS 450 and such) around this time?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Aha! I don't regard machines installing these as laptops, as I will never want to put any of these on my laps...

I really hope they come up with a great cooling solution. Would love to see a dual 480m laptop setup. It probably would come with its own generator

considering the price... id say this is either a low voltage gt200 based part, or a low voltage gf100 based part...
either way, cooling this will be... a challange... even at reduced clocks, reduced voltages and disabled blocks it should be close to 100W tdp...

i dont buy it tho, eurocom was talking about quadcore laptops way back as well, supposedly based on a q6600, then they talked about dual quadcore laptops... and it was all marketing bs and never happened afaik...

Exactly what I was thinkin! Since nVidia used the G92 core in just about every "high-end" laptop video solution.

Are laptops not hot enough already? Are they going to include another one of those cooking heatsinks on the laptops?

...guess someone is making fun of nVidia
my personal opinion is that we wont ever see a "true" fermi in a laptop, neither Dell nor Apple will risk their reputation as laptop makers just to "show off" a fermi-laptop only to have thousands of laptops exploding all over the world.

btw if i recall correctly the official propaganda was that fermi was designed for "cuda, scientific stuff etc" not a laptop

"Generally speaking, CMOS power consumption is the result of charging and discharging gate capacitors. The charge required to fully charge the gate grows with the voltage; charge times frequency is current. Voltage times current is power. So, as you raise the voltage, the current consumption grows linearly, and the power consumption quadratically, at a fixed frequency. Once you reach the frequency limit of the chip without raising the voltage, further frequency increases are normally proportional to voltage. In other words, once you have to start raising the voltage, power consumption tends to rise with the cube of frequency."

    100W TDP .
My guess would be a redesigned GTX2xx-series-based part.
Currently, GTX2xxM high-end parts are still G92-based, so IMO if this piece
of news is true, then it's more likely to be GTX2xx-based than GF100-series,
not to mention that lower GTX4xx-series is scheduled later and we didn't
have much news about tape-out so far.

    100w...

Go look at a 95w TDP CPU's BOX cooler for an idea of what you need to cool this bohemoth.

You dont fit that into a 1 inch form factor.

    Yes, probably.
