It looks to have a lot more surface area. I would say it does 12 degrees cooler and around 4 dB quieter when compared to the reference cooler solution.

would agree but there is no sign of there being heatpipes on that cooler,

I guess above one is PALIT custom made 470 & if it does ......... its vcore may not be adjustable .

I would expect any one buying this would suffer as Sapphire toxic 5870 blue PCB ones

Does that kind of cooler exhaust the hot air into the case?

and yes, higher surface area, but if you dont use heatpipes that surface area is not going to be very efficient as the delay of ambient to surface area will be lower...

So you guys don't see the nice vertical lines going through the fins that look suspiciously like they're probably heatpipes? =P

The heat pipes and fins don't look near as heavy as the stock cooler. And with the heat being added to the case if there is a drop in temps the hotter case temps in some rigs will make it pointless. It looks like a AC design under there. You know if AC puts one out it will have 3 fans and be alot bigger.

if you reread the reviews you can see that most say the GTX 470 is inaudible at 70% and only becomes really loud at 100%

edit: and there are heatpipes, they're just coated in nickel or aluminium which means fail unless the cooler was designed by thermalright.

those thin white lines? heatpipes? hmmm idk... doesnt look that way to me tbh... too thin...

my msi twin frozr is very similar and anything above 50% is pretty noisy...
inaudible is around 30%, even 40% is very notable...

I don't mean to jump in here and disrupt a perfectly good speculation fest by interjecting some info the net actually HAS about this cooler (sarcasm intended), but there ARE some fairly reputable sites reporting it to have heat pipes, copper based HS, not to mention being considerably longer with greater fin area. Not only that, there's pics showing rear exhaust fan slots, so why the trash talking speculation people?

There's also claims (Palit's no doubt) that the temp result is 12c lower at load and 4db quieter, which seems reasonable given the details. Now only one site gave mention of whom designed the HS, so I'm not sure that's legit info, but they said it was designed by Thermalright. If that's the case these cards certainly won't be cheap even if not OCed, as some of the sites are saying.

I'm not saying anything's proven one way or another performance wise on this cooler, but for God's sake give the speculation a rest and at least wait to comment until some legit tests have been run.

Here is a reference for you guys: I have the Gigabyte GTX 470. MSI Afterburner
installed and set to 55% idle fan speed. Its pretty quiet at that setting and keeps
the temp at 39c to 40c. The room is 71f. During heavy gaming with the game
Stalker (heavily modded), the fan speed goes to 75% and holds the temp at 74c.
At 75% fan speed, during gaming I don't notice it at all. No headphones. I'm
sure it could be heard if not for the sound of the game. I feel that this 75% fan
speed is fine. You might feel different but it took a big game just to get it to kick
up to that speed. Using the Hiper Anubis case w/3 120mm fans.
This is factual and might be a decent comparison for judging an aftermarket
    cooler.

It's pretty loud at just 80% from what I've read, let alone 100%, and at full speed it can easily disrupt conversations, unless you like talking at around 90db. I plan to wait until the non pre-order customers review these and more after market air cooling solutions come out. Seems to me so far those whom have them give overly glowing reviews.

I can assure you that at age 54, I'm too old to "glow"...LOL. Trying to be completely honest here. No real difference between this cooler and my GTX 260
or GTX 275. I'm sure at 100% it IS loud although I've never had it there. The
sound is just one of AIR moving...no whine. I just got mine - no pre-order.

I just got my Gigabyte GTX 470 as well and here's my take on noise. For people who say it's inaudible at 70% they probably have hearing problem since even though it's not that loud, I just can't stand using it on a daily basis with my fan speed @ 70%, anything under 60% is okay and 50% seems to be inaudible but over 70% and it will start whinning like a pig LOL. Once again it's probably because I use it in my CM 690 II Advanced case and the GTX 470 is the loudest component in my case when set the fan over 60%, and I'm sitting right next to it.
As for temp, I ran Furmark at 1920x1200, 32x MSAA for about 20 mins with fan set to 80% and the max temp is 84C. I played Metro 2033 for 10-15 mins with fan speed at 50% and according to GPU-Z, the average temp is about 94 and max temp hits 105C. LOL. My conclusion is never set fan speed under 70% when gaming unless you wanna kill your card soon.

Thanks Travis, sounds about right, and why I'm leaning more toward a temp get me by card on my new build, then a 28nm Fermi come next yr. I have a line on a once used EVGA GTS 250 Superclock for $80 with shipping included.

The more I read about these cards the more I get the feeling they're just too power hungry to ever be as efficient in performance to noise/temp ratio as I'd like them to be. I'm doubting any dual slot after market cooler will make much of a difference either.

At some point you have to wonder if trying to make these cards run more efficiently is like trying to stuff a watermelon in a banana peel. The current Fermis are overweight, like it or not.

    a 250 is a great card...
    and very power efficient...

    about the 470s and 480s...
well, they come with pretty much top of the line heatsinks already...
i think a 470 with a 480 heatsink would be sweet... but besides that all you can do is go h20...

so yeah if you care about heat, noise, power consumption then the gf100 cards arent the best buy... on water they might be ok, but then again all that heat is going to end up in your room one way or the other

If temp is what you concern most then you'll be annoyed with the GTX 4xx series, the idle temp is good but definitely not under load, WC is seem to be the only solution but not everyone wanna buy a card and think about putting it under water, especially the mainstream user or even some enthusiasts like me.
Anyway it all comes down to price/performance, if you can get the GTX 470 for around $300 like I did then it's a good buy. I'm gonna let it go soon and get the GTX 480 to play around with it.
