    overclocking

Need a little help guys. I haven't overclocked in a while because I had some bad RAM. Now that I have some good RAM I want to overclock my system back to where I used to have it. You can see my system in the signature. I used to have my chip overclocked from 2.6 to 3.0 and I had cool and quiet set so it would be underclocked when not needed. But I think I have forgotten the best way to overclock since cool and quiet isn't working. I upped my mutiplier to 15 from 13 to get where I wanted. I know there are other ways, should I try them? I see that doing it this way has left my RAM the same instead of overclocking it with my chip. What am I missing? thanks

You're not really "missing" anything. OC is dependant on the board / ram/and CPU. You have an unlocked multi which makes OC"ing easy. Some CPUs don't have that and you can only OC using thr FSBor HTreference what ever you like to call it it's the CPU's base frequency which is usually at 200. Some people use a combination of FSB and multi others don't. The thing to remember is that when you raise your"base" frequency you also raise the RAM/CPU_NB and HT frequencies. SO more care and patience is needed when using the FSB to OC. One benefit is you can increase your OC by 20Mhz intervals instead of 100MHz when using the FSB. So you can sometimes get a bit mor clock without adding more voltage.

Thanks, so if I use the FSB will the cool and quiet work?

Ya C&Q will work no matter how you OC. You should use the ofset voltages and make sure Windows is set to balanced should be all good.

My system is set to balanced but C&Q isn't working. By ofset voltages you mean?

In the Bios you usually will have 3 voltage options. Manual /Auto/and offset. To find your Offset setting it helps to know you CPU Pstates. Use CPU-z and go to the About tab and then save as text. It'll put out a report where your CPU-z .exe is located. In there you should find a section with Pstates. If your standard clock on that chip is 2.6 you'll want the reading beside the 13x line. Let's just say it's 1.35v. If you need 1.416v to be stable at 3.0 then for your CPU offset you'll set it to +.065v .
Oh and you'll only get your proper Pstate reading if the CPU is at Defaults in Bios. So save your OC settings first.
