Hey, thanks for the quick reply - but I got two questions for you.
This is going into a friends budget gamer - any idea how the 512 mb vs 1 gb will affect things? I'm thinking 1GB would be worth the extra, especially if I could find it for around $40 like before.
Also, is cooling on these an issue? I was hoping for a EVGA or XFX just that that I didn't have to worry about heat (lifetime warranty and all) cuz this will be in a closed case. Has airflow, but it's far from a performance case.
Hoping to pull the trigger pretty quick cuz I'm building it Wed when the HDDs arrive and until I get this it's gunna be running a no name gfx board from an old 2002 P4 system...
Thanks for your help man.
I can find a GTX260 on eBay for about $70-85. How will it go against a GT240?
Ah, good idea... just started looking at ebay quick. Kinda warry though as I'll wait two days only to get snipped...
Also gonna browse the FS section here for 240, 250, 260...
I don't know man, how much point does a GTX260 produce?
these are budget cards, so i don't think you'll need 1gb of memory. most likely you'll hit a GPU limitation in gaming before memory capacity. what games will he be playing? and if it's used for a gaming card, get the ddr5 version, as there is a noticeable difference between the ddr3 vs ddr5 in gaming performance. in crunching performance, there's hardly any difference between ddr3 and ddr5. here is a comparison in games between ddr3 vs ddr5 on anandtech. this review was done while these cards were still over $100:

as for cooling, these will be one of the coolest running cards there is, mainly because they're based on 40nm, unlike the other other 200 series cards that are based on 55nm/65nm tech. i have 5 gt240's total, and the hottest one loads around 63C with a single slot cooler.
two of my gt240's produce a little more than one of my gtx260's (216), and both consumes a little less power than one gtx260 also.
stay clear of the gts250, these are horrible crunchers. i think it's because they're based on the old g92 cores, which is the same as the 8800gt and 9800gt. i have had a few of these in the past, and i thought it was defective, but that's just how they really preform. i still have one of them now, and it's much slower than one of my gt240's. they're good for folding, not crunching. IMO, get the gt240 and if you want to bump up, then the gtx260 (216). i haven't seen one good producing gts250 on gpugrid:

Otis11, i found another one for you, perhaps that 2nd cheapest i've ever seen. grap it quick before it runs out haha:
EVGA gt240 512mb ddr5 $30AR + shipping
Man, great find!
I'll run down to MC tomorrow. Don't know what I'll use the rebate for though... Cuz something tells me it's going to be a EVGA credit thing. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks again man... I really don't know how you find these.
when i look for these deals, i just browse the top online or big electronic stores in this order: newegg, tigerdirect, amazon, fry's, microcenter. if there's none, then i look at zipzoomfly, ewiz/SuperBiiz, or other smaller retailers.
as for rebate, evga is very reliable rebate, you can request them to send a check, or by default, they will send a prepaid citi card, which you can use it pretty much anywhere on anything.
Sweet man... Grabbed one today and drivers are installing as I type. It's not going to end up in this rig, but will run here for a few days while the next build awaits parts.
Thanks again man.
Suckage, always hated navigation on tigerdirect, i was pulling the trigger on that 240 but they said it wouldn't ship until Sept. Rest of my order wouldn't ship for another week........weak sauce, back to the egg, not sure if it ends up being more after the MIRs but at least you have peace of mind and i know my stuff will be here by Monday at the latest....

I ordered my evga gt240 superclocked and my evga 460 768mb from amazon. Mostly because I have Prime and because I get triple points for amazon purchases . But the gt240 was only $45 after rebates and the 460 $199 which seems pretty competitve if not the best price ever.

dang amazon had a gt 240 superclocked for $36 after rebate but it's dead now. I ordered an i3 and motherboard to replace my s939 dual core athlon haha, would like to add another gt240 to it too.
