problem is, it runs incredibly slow. the o/s is XP (already installed when purchased). it take ages to boot up to the log on screen, then running the system is slow too. i've tried everything, from clean up to reboot, still the same issue. i even put in more ram, no real difference apart from about 15minutes after booting up. the system hasn't got loads of start up proggys runnign and security software isn't taking much of the cpu. could someone please tell me if settings above are correct, also if you need more information via a software, im happy to provide it. also, would buying a new & better processor for that motherboard speed it up? if so could you advise.

    many thanks in advance.

Although a D 805 is one of the slowest early dualcores, it shouldn`t be the reason for your problems described. I can imagine, that PIO-mode was activated by the OS, which can even happen after inserting a sratchy optical disk. Did you check that already with an HDD benchmark like HDTune or HDTach?

it came with a recovery partition. i've got an external harddrive for all files and only windows and program files hog the main h/d.

Hyperhorn i have had doubts about the h/d but haven't been able to figure it out properly.

    The chip can be speedy.

I'm on win7 with a celeron, not the dual. Single core ftw!

you know sometimes your system gets slowed down because of all the malware built up on your system. You should down load Malwarebytes
and superantispyware. They both have free versions. I make a lot of money cleaning up people's systems. Don't think your anti-virus program is catching
all this stuff cuz it isn't!!! Then go to run and type in msconfig.exe and click on Selective start up and shut off the things you don't to start up when you fire up each time.
Don't select everything if you want your system to ever boot again. You can google the things you need to leave on to start. too many people download programs and set them to start with the system
I have seen so many resources used up there was not much left. And why did you have someone look at your system to begin with!!
If all else fails you can do a fresh install but this is a good chance to learn to clean up and sharpen up a slow system.

I've done everything possible mate regarding virus scans, registry, defrag, tune up, optimize. the system takes ages when booting to the welcome screen, log on isn't as bad I've disabled everything possible to speed it up.

my usual and easy fix to this problem is to reinstall the OS from scratch,
if you got the recovery disks or your able to create them use them

    !! Important !!
*you need the Key which should be located on a sticker that is placed on your chase.
*Make a back up of all data you need on separate drive!!

If this is your first time installing OS just read and you'll be fine
just be aware that it wipes all data from your dive.

Hi mate, apologies for the real late reply I ended up putting it aside.

I'll do a re-install of the OS but I'm going to have to get my hands on an untouched XP media edition disc where my original key will work! the partition currently holds the recovery so I'll have to delete that. no point attempting to burn it as it may create the partition again

regarding the processor, can it be upgraded without burning out the mobo? I'll obviously look to replace the heat sink and fan as well as look at the airflow but basic stuff not extreme cooling. the socket seems to support better processors....

wiki has the following regarding the socket - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

    Intel Pentium 4 (2.60 - 3.80 GHz)
    Intel Celeron D (2.53 - 3.60 GHz )
    Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
    Intel Pentium D (2.66 - 3.60 GHz)
    Pentium Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
    Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 3.33 GHz)
    Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
    Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
    Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
    Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
    Intel Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)

I may want to upgrade the OS in the future, it will be a bonus if I can get this system win7 "ready"

The socket physically will fit the newer CPU's, but it is highly unlikely that your motherboard will support any of the newer CPU's ad therefor won't boot.
However, your comp will run win 7 in its current state, although it won't be fast.

If I were you I would not invest any money in this computer as it is very outdated and it would be best to invest that money in a entire new computer or at least a mobo, memory, cpu, graphics card upgrade.
