    *** NVIDIA 470/480 Series Thread ***

Why is there no thread for this yet?

    My Palit 480 GTX:

    Standard:

30 minutes of furmark, passed Vantage Extreme and 3hrs of BF:BC2 - Appears to be it's maximum/quite happy for 24/7.

This cards amazing, all this bad press about it seems completely unjust.. I'd almost go as far to say it's some sort of "Hardware Enthusiast Conspiracy".

It makes my 280 GTX/SLI look absolutely terrible in my opinion...

GTA 4, can be wacked up to everything high/vhigh, sliders to maximum 16x AF 4x AA, 1920x1200.
Min fps: ive been able to achieve from god knows how many car explosions is 43fps.

FSX, with the INSANE amount of addons i have, minimum is 11fps.. Sounds terrible? Well with my 280 GTX i couldn't even go near London without game crashing..

BF:BC2, everything max, HABO off 16x AF 4x AA 1920x1200 is now playable..
To put that into perspective, 1024x768, everything medium 280 GTX/SLI was "playable".

87% is the maximum the fan has gone up to for me when left at AUTO, max temps are 93C.

received my 470 in the mail this morning, Palit also. Got it up to 675 core and 1350 memory so far, any higher and i seem to get some artifacts on Heaven bench, not sure from which setting, but the dragon statue goes transparent when you get too close lol.

I've come from dual 295s and i may not be on this card for long, just had to sell the 295s while i could get a decent price for them, since i'll be spending alot of time in Windowed Mode on a game that will launch this year it was a no-brainer to ditch SLI. I may in a few months sell this and get some 480s, depends what Crysis 2 brings to the table The fact that my x1950 pro fallback card was a complete nightmare in win 7 was also a factor in getting this now.

I like the stock fan profile, stays pretty quiet at all times even under full load. I guess coming from 295s that was gonna be the case anyway.

I'm not sure I'd go THAT far, but some sites definitely were overly harsh... I don't get it either. Great OP .

Here's my post of my GTX 470 ... no real need for a second thread so I'll put it here:

    -------

My GTX 470 arrived a couple of days ago...

What is very interesting is the fan noise and temps: fan noise @ 70% is not loud at all, just air whooshing at a dull tone, no "whine" or whirring. It is perfectly comfortable to me, whereas a 5870 at above 38% began to emit a whirr, and eventually a hairdryer-like noise @ 70%+ speed. Now, the big surprise here for me was, that the temperatures are nowhere near as high in my system as they are in the reviews... take a look at the data I took from GPU-Z 0.42 and eVGA Precision in my notes:

    720c/3520mem 70% fan
    NFS Shift peak temp: 76c
    BFBC2 peak temp: 80c
    SF4 peak temp: 72c

Again, the fan is very unobtrusive noise-wise inside my case (Coolermaster RC690). Idle temperature is 35c after letting it sit for around 25 minutes websurfing.

    Anyway, onto the actual performance...

    TEST SETUP:
    Intel i7 920 HT on, 3.72ghz
    6GB DDR3 @ 8-8-8-2T timings, 1560mhz
    nVidia GTX470 1280MB/ATI Radeon 5870 1GB
256GB Crucial M225-series SSD (Indilinx barefoot controller with samsung nand)
    Dell 3007WFP-HC 2560x1600 LCD monitor
    -----

5870 Clocks (for NFS shift #'s) was 925c/4900m (9.11 drivers back then), for BFBC2/SF4 they were stock (850/1200) with 10.2 drivers
GTX 470 Clocks for these tests below: 704c/1408s/3504m, 197.41 drivers

    NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT:
2560x1600, 8x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options, several laps of Ambush Canyon, DX10

    GTX470 OC'd: 53min, 64avg
    5870 OC'd @ launch: 32-35min, 50avg

    Street Fighter 4:
2560x1600, 8x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options w/ ink filter, in-game bench

    GTX470 OC'd: 148.2fps avg
    5870 stock: 124.4fps avg

    Battlefield Bad Company 2:
2560x1600, 4x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options w/ HBAO enabled, DX11, Port Valdez "Rush" mode (full game)

    GTX470 OC'd: 37min, 52avg
    5870 Stock: 25min, 41avg

    ------------

    A quick Unigine Heaven bench...

    ------------

Now that I've had it a couple of days I overclocked further with a voltage tweak:

Results are quite nice, and it scales very well performance-wise! Peak temps are 86c with 73% fan, which is the last step before it becomes "loud" or bothersome to me at all. It is 100% stable through a day+ of gaming with BF Bad Company 2, Warhammer Online, WOW, NFS Shift, SF4, Dirt 2 benching, 3dmark Vantage benching, and Heaven benching.

Overall I am quite impressed with it... . Faster than a 5870 even at the 700 OC (not just for me, see results like this as well: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/32...d/index13.html), and much faster at my 800 OC.

Here are some of my pics. Haven't done any benchmarks, but playing BFBC2 at 2560x1600 Highest settings, HBAO on, 8xcsaa, 16xAF, 2xTRAA looks amazing!!!!

I got my 480 last Friday.

    Idle temp @ 100% fan 41C.
Load temp @ 100% fan 87C. Its not that bad as reported. But the fan is really noisy. It does not bother me because I am using a headset when gaming.

Using a Kill-A-Watt my system idles at 280W and in full load it's at 580W.

Quite impressive indeed and thanks for linking the review, its pretty revealing. I wouldn't be able handle that kind of noise personally but they do measure at 2 CM which means real world noise wouldn't be as bad. However 10db at that distance still translates into a much louder fan. That said with a waterblock on the card it would be pretty damn impressive. I'm starting to warm up to the idea of a watercooled 480 at high clocks ( literally and metaphorically lol ) A 32m 512 core 485 like card on water would be epic to say the least. If Nvidia manage that in a reasonable time frame AMDs next series will have a serious battle on its hands ( at least in the high end segment )

Yes, i too noticed this.. In actual gaming the card never seems to go over 83c.

Your Vantage score is pretty impressive to say the least, mine with a 920 @ 4ghz, was X10498.

awesome. it's about time someone started a thread like this. lol. OP nice memory clock.

I've been able to get my 480 up to 870/2200 but I can only run Kombuster for about 10 minutes with that high. but 860/2100 was vantage stable.. and setting fan's manually I've yet to see it go over 85c ONCE. these cards really did get some very unjust press. my water-block is coming soon. (whenever DD ships it, was in stock when ordered but now says backordered) and I'll be watercooling it. I'm also getting a eVGA 480 and I'll keep whatever clocks better for my water-cooling. I have the gigabyte now.

Now for some Eye Candy! (Click to Enlarge)

and this last photo cuz the angle is really cool.

Stock coldplate on the ram and VRM's and a cheapo Zalman CPU block scavenged from the Reserator X on the core. I've maxed out the MSI Afterburner.

Holy crap, Randi! Been a looooong time old friend! You sir are a TRUE legend.

Keep'em coming, fellas, don't be shy. By the way there's a bug in Smart Doc it looks like it doesn't apply memory clocks but the good news it can set the volts to 1.138V compared to 1.125V in Afterburner, so set the voltage using Smart Doc, then open MSI Afterburner and use it to overclock your card.

Grats... and BAH! Let us know how far you take it ! I'm still playing with my GTX 470, have it up to 803core/1606shader/3900ram so far on the stock air cooling. These things love memory bandwidth...

Mine was able to hit around 700c/1400s/3500mem on stock volts with ~70% fan (eVGA GTX 470). With volts upped, I am at 800c/1600s/3900mem at ~75% speed, rock-solid stable, in the end it seems I had to raise to 1.050v to make it stable for really long sessions even though 1.012v would run for about 45mins-60mins just fine.

The core probably has more room in it but I don't want to up the fan further. I set up a nice fan profile at 40-45% fan for while on the desktop, and raising once it hits any gaming temp , so nice quiet desktop use and can't hear it while gaming really .
