So, I've played around a bit with my GTX480

The block is old / small and cost all of 10$ ages ago.. The shroud over the ram is made from plastic and is just there to act as a heat shield. So theres no need to cool anything apart from the CAPs at the end. I kept the fan there and its running at ~20%.




The IHS is higher than the plastic so you can use a bigger block.

50C I had other runs with different AA levels, but theres a bottleneck somewhere with current drivers for its a few C cooler Same system with a GTX 280 EK full cover gave 55C..

nice not bad, so this tells us something, obviosly the gpu puts out more heat than the stock cooler is rated for, meaning nvidia either cheaped out on the cooler design or rushed it out so as not to delay the cards any longer.

or it means water-cooling does an effective job of removing heat . . Nvidia did make sure a block would be available at launch. not sure how much more you can do with an air-cooler. When someone posts an aftermarket air-cooler that would be feasible as a retail OEM/AIC solution then you can comment

Yeah, theres not much you can do with a 2slot card. Surface area is surface area..

Stock coolers on video cards have pretty much always been junk... they design in just enough robustness to prevent the GPU from cooking (granted, there are a few exceptions).

Reminds me of people complaining about the HD4850's dumping a lot of heat (you could burn yourself on the cooler and the GPU would hit 80c+ at load) when, in reality, they dumped hardly anything... the stock cooler was just junk. Put 'em on old MCW60's and you'd be lucky to see 'em break 35-40c at load when overclocked. Heck, I have an HD4850 running passive in my HTPC with a modified Arctic Cooling Accelero S1.

Anyway, my point is that people tend to overestimate thermal output when they're basing their estimate on the performance (or lack thereof) of a video card's stock cooler.

Seeing how new parts continuously keep getting hotter and hotter. I'm happy that I moved into watercooling . Never used stock coolers anyway but I wouldnt be surprised if market aircoolers wouldnt do the job soon anymore either . Unless you use them with san aces or smth...

Nice results...hopefully it leads to some decent overclocking. The stock cooler seems to be pretty close to capacity.

not really.. 47C load when the DD and Swiftech are getting 49-51C... Fermi runs warm. anthing under 55C is good

I think people get to hung up on temp.. Fermi dont mind heat.. any block you use to cool it with is better then air and alot quieter. 1-5c not going to change how well it overclocks

its a 5 heatpipe HDT cooler, its very beefy for a factory solution

Well, isn't the expected heat assumed from the power consumption benchmarks. I've seen a few reviews where the gtx480 consumed more power than a 5970. Maybe the inefficiencies are tied up somewhere on the board but not on the actual gpu. Maybe some tests of the thermals on different areas of the board will actually resolve this.

I'm still on the fence about getting one, but I'm excited at what a revision, process shrink, and driver improvement may be able to do over the course of the next 6 months. The shrink for the g92 from 65nm to 55nm was pretty amazing from a power consumption standpoint.

Regardless, it's pretty impressive to get lower temps on the fermi vs the gtx 280.
