Making sure you have decent insulation in your home is probably THE biggest thing you can do to save power, but that's not always very cheap to get set up in the first place.

In the mean time, make sure you turn your monitor OFF when you're not using it rather than leaving it to drop to stand-by when it finally gets around to it.

I have not seen this posted up directly anywhere on WCG ... maybe start a thread over there and brag about kicking ascii and taking names with regular updates to highlight our daily increases? We are not doing this for ourselves so why not invite the world to try and match our membership increase (even if some of it is only temporary)?

Yeah I heat my room in the winter with computers. With so many shut down now from selling off stuff it is actually a little chilly in here. Oh well, it'll help this summer, then I'll get new hot rigs for the next winter

BTW, if some of the stuff I have for sale doesn't sell by the challenge date, I'll throw it back together and get it crunching again.

Joined WCG today as soon as I saw Movieman's email.

Hooked up a i7-860 and a i7-720QM for the team. That's 16 threads of crunching goodness.

I'll do my best to keep them running through to May 8.

Ok, so I see alot of people asking about using their GPU and GPUGrid, as well as some other questions that haven't been answered, so here it goes:

GPUGrid is a seperate project that uses CUDA tech to do research. (More info here and how to join here) Although it is not associated with WCG, those of you that have powerful GPUs, we'd love to see you join for a bit and see what we can do as a team!

Yes, GPUGrid can be run on laptop GPUs, but I personally do not recommend doing so unless you have a VERY good cooling system. Your GPU can handle it, the cooling cannot. DESKTOP GPUs, on the other hand, even with STOCK COOLERS ARE ABSOLUTELY FINE! (and can even handle it overclocked on stock cooling)

Bandwidth usage - for WCG should not be a problem. In a month of usage the BOINC download will take more bandwidth than the WUs, and that doesn't take much at all. (<30MB a week definately unless you're running an entire farm)

GPUGrid on the other hand can take a little bandwidth. Still probably not enough to be noticed, but more than WCG. I'm restricted to 5GB a week and never ran into problems running both WCG and GPUGrid though - just as a frame of reference.

If there are any other questions, just post up!

(BTW - we recently took #1 in the world in GPUGrid!)
