Answered to that below. Fact is that you gave me no time to edit . I do not know ( I do but forget ) how to multiquote ( and as the forum does not have message merging ) I need to edit to keep it tidy
    How about this?

Hey Duh, with all the info that's been collected, links and such, do you want to edit the first post so it's consolidated? Put the list of what people are doing, and also who is IN...just a thought.

edit: also i'm funneling people here from other threads that are asking what more they can do and cheaply....

hey duh good to see you. how many boards are up to now? What do you think of the cross-forum group buy File Not Found suggested?

To multi-quote: Click "MULTI-QUOTE" on each post you want to quote, they will turn to "SAAYA", then when you have all you want selected click any one "QUOTE" next to a "SAAYA" and that's it.

not really. fact is that people will go and get it if we do place all the info in one single place.. which will leave us with no board or with boards but with higher prices..

I could ask the seller to reserve them for us, right? I know this would be liked but I would not have my word broken ( as I canīt oblige people or respond on their behalf with $).

I need to answer back some other posts.. time is killing me :S

    Question Interested

I'm intrigued and hesitant at the same time because I know nothing about building a server. I've only built gaming rigs.

*Pending everything is doable and available while still remaining relatively cheap, I'd be down for 1 board and 4 procs and ram.

    I still have questions:

Approximate Cost to make this happen?

    How to house the board?

    Vid card needed?

    OS needed?

    PSU needed?

Could you please make a walk through showing exactly how to setup everything once you get your test unit up and running?

alot of those questions are in this thread already but rest assured it will be more than worth the price. some of us will be not be putting it into a case because 1. it's huge 2. it cuts down cost. Don't be afraid of it being a server board, there are others that already have this set up and running so the info is there and when the time comes we'll all get it up and running no prob.

If I understand correctly the cpu seller from ebay sells for a fixed price of $27.5, but doesn't need a group buy? We could all order separately, or maybe a group buy only for a Europe if that ends up cheaper.

Someone linked to $2.60 heatsinks on ebay, there's a bracket there too, I linked ram for $35. Adapters 2$ each. All that remains is the psu, which you can find in the $~50 range at your favorite online store or cheaper used.

It doesn't get any cheaper than this.
regarding that: I have no problem, but we should ensure our buy first and that the seller does not run out of units.. otherwise providing so much info and work does not make sense

Clear as mud to me so far. I should have $100, perhaps more, available at the beginning of June. Can I get a summary of exactly what hardware is available through the community buy? I don't know AMD so I will have to do some research. And Thanks Duh for the effort, this looks to be a cat-herding piece of work

Alright let me answer some of your questions.

Vga : There is NO onboard vga. you need to use a single slot (double slot blocks the power button and there is a capacitor that blocks double slot gpu's) vga to have a display connected. I'm sure there is a way to setup a remote control desktop.

motherboard housing : the hole spacing is, I think, proprietary of ARIMA. need to check that. the size is specified somewhere in the thread though (16*13?)

OS : it needs to support 16 cores. ubuntu, any linux distro (except maybe redhat which is licensed). I think you really want to run 64bit stuff on this baby.

PSU : any solid legendary 550w, otherwise you need to get a higher wattage PSU. Single rail ONLY, as you will be connecting the motherboard with 6-pins and 8-pins

    Thumbs up cool thanks

I wonder if it would fit in this...

    Antec Skeleton
    Unit Dimensions:
    • 13"(H) x 14.8"(W) x 16.5"(D)
    • 33 cm(H) x 37.6 cm(W) x 41.9 cm(D)

I think I might have a single slot vga card somewhere around here.

Oh ya thanks for all the work to everyone that is helping to make this happen.

Got a PM's from Duh and Shoota. I'm intrigued. I will re-read this thread closely for the board info and start looking for cpu's. Please put me down for a tentative 1 board. Thanks all.

Probably not. The Skeletons only take a regular ATx board. They won't even handle a Sossaman rig (Intel board, eATx)

no...AFAIK here is a list of the cases that support SSI-MEB size (16*13) with little to no modding...and don't cost an arm/leg/firstborn
-Stacker 810 and its non stacker cousin (STC-01?)
-lian-li PC-A70/71/77 should, but you'd have to remove the top HDD tray and get some metal to fab another couple inches of mobo try
    - lian-li PC-X2000F looks like it should be able to...might be a bit of a squeeze though
-mountain mods should be able to make one...they've been saying they're going to make an SSI-MEB tray for a while now

If I do make one it will definitely be a ghetto special. Last time I made a custom arcade desktop console for my MAME games I used somebodies old dresser I found in the alley and cut it up.

So I went looking through my collection of old stuff and found 3 40 gig hds, 1 ATI x800xl AGP graphics card (not gonna help for this build), and two AMD stock heatsinks (one is a 939 the other is a am3).

I guess I'm gonna need to hit up the local mom and pop computer repair places and see if they kept an old vga card. This kills me because I recently took a ton of old parts to purple heart as E waste! I donated TWO vga cards! Bummer.

[ANOTHER NOOB QUESTION] A vga AGP? or just a VGA PCI card? [/ANOTHER NOOB QUESTION]
