That may be a problem for me because i have one dvd 6 fans, 2 hdd's 1 ssd, and my cpu is a Phemon ii 940 Black edition and i dont want to get rid of any of them
Sure . . . it can handle easily one 5970, even 2 of them

Yes, any GOOD 750w power supply will be able to take care of a 940BE & HD5970
the Corsair you have will run that system just fine... but two HD5970's - UH... NO!
right now I'm running 2x Xeon 5420's in a Skulltrail setup w/ 2x HD4870's in crossfire, plus 4 hard drives with a Zippy 700w and it's not even breaking a sweat... but I did just get my Zippy 1200w in the mail last week, so that's going in my build pretty soon

i also just remembered that i was thinking about installing a liquid cooling system too or would that use up to much power?
a water cooling pump on average, only draws 10-18 watts... 25 watts maximum for typical 12v DC pumps - you wouldn't have any problems with drawing too much power in addition to your system

I ran my 4870x2 at stock with my x48 / q6600 system ( which was at 3.6Ghz ) on my Enermax. That said a 750 should be fine assuming proper amperage. However if you plan to highly clock the system AND the 5970 you *might* be asking for trouble. There have been a fair share of reviews / users who mention that they had power issues when overclocking even small amounts. Now if you plan on going water ( and can afford it ) you should be able to afford a beefier PSU (given a nice PSU only costs a few bucks more than a 5970 waterblock ) but thats just my 10 cents

I can't argue your math but I've always worked from the perspective of overkill is just enough..
For me with two of those especially if OC'ing them I'd want a minimum of a 100w and probably 1200w
When I set up the 2-5970's on my SR2 rig I had a PCP+C1200w feeding everything but the cards.
Had a separate 1200w Antec on those..

Couldn't have said it better myself!People just over-do everything, you are more than fine with a 750W PSU for that card. You will never use 1200W, not even on triple SLI/CrossX
It kinda pisses me off how rediculous people get with PSU's, have you actually measured the draw of your system? no-one needs more than 1000w's and remember these are rated CONTINUOS power not even peak! Yes a 750watt will be fine, anyhow its the current draw on the rails that is the real issue. MAYBE 2 may be a bit of a strain, but I doubt it, if your worried, maybe stagger the spin-up time of the HD's as they spike a bit on spin-up but not hugely.

Yes, really necessary. You don't run PSU's are their rated max or even close to it unless you want to kill them.
I've got a kill-a-watt on this system and with with one GTX260 card thats turned down and idling I'm pulling a solid 650+W at 100% load on the cpu's.(2-X5680's at 4152 on air, 8-113cfm 120x25 Delta's and 3 HD)
Now imagine a couple 5770's( essentially 4 cards as they are double GPU's) OC'd and you think one 1200w PSU would hold up?
I don't and when you have that kind of money involved overkill is just right.

PSU is the backbone of a system. If peep can buy $1000 worth of GPUs and $400 for memory might as well buy a quality high Wattage PSU.
If the psu went south then most of the time it will took other hardwares with it
I learned the lesson when my always reliable Antec 500 watts took my Gforce and AMD FX with it
Now I run a Zippy-Emacs 850Watter with a 5970, (1) HDD...Thats it, don't dare and no need to add more peripherals

At that time 600Watter considered top of the line

When I was building this SR2 rig I got some advice from Peter Tan on what to use for a PSU.
I followed that advice as it agreed with my own and Peter I trust totally.
Then I learned that if I was going to toss on two 5970's I'd better get another and I really was surprised at that until I got educated by people I trust.. Fugger,chew,etc.. all said 'get a second PSU and a GOOD one"
Now I know, yea, even old dogs learn new tricks.

I7 920 at 4.36 @ 1.325v
5 HDD, 1 SATA Bluray-rom
2 x 25cm case fans and 4 x 120mm noctuas
and a partridge in a pear tree...
The 5970 is a Hauss don't get me wrong, but it's also a newer more efficient card. It puts out better performance and less power draw than my 4870X2s...

1200w psu for peripherals and cpu + 1200w psu for graphics cards???? Are you MADD? Why should I go and buy a voltmeter to satisfy your argument? I don't have any issues with stability, heat, or power. The original question was "can i run a 5970 with a 750w corsair psu?" , and the answer is YES.

Well this issue brings up a very interesting but also common point that we've always been talking about: Do we have enough power? So far I've heard a mix up opinions so might as well joining this thread and see what do you guys think. First of all I would say that if you plan to run 2x5970 then you definitely need at least a 1000W PSU, this is tested by a member of in another forum. He tried to run 2 5970 with a Corsair HX850W and he couldn't even get 3DMark Vantage run properly and we all know how powerful the HX850W is. Secondly, I would say it depends on what kind of PSU since the total number of wattage doesn't really matter but it's more like on the single 12V rail, for me personally I would take the one with higher amps on a single 12V rail any day. I have a GTX 295 that can run just fine with my Corsair HX650W but the dude who sold me the card said he had problem running it with his 750W-800W, maybe he got a crappy PSU but I don't know. Anyway, back to my GTX 295, I have no problem running it daily but I notice that when I play some games at certain point the games started to crash, I don't think it's the driver issue since I'm pretty careful in term of this kind of thing, always use Driver Sweeper before install another driver. This plus I've heard that for some reason, even if you can assume your PSU can keep up with your video card and the rest of your system just fine assuming you just run it on a daily basis but in the long term you might run into problem and eventually the PSU can no longer provide enough juice and will die slowly, I really want an opinion on this. For me I did notice a bit sluggish in my computer overall performance down the road when I had the GTX 295 but I just did a quick test by swapping it with a 4870X2 and I can feel my computer is much more responsive. I don't have a voltmeter so I don't know how much my 2nd rig draw in total but I think down the road my system become unstable, that's probably a sign of a PSU losing its power.
