Enermax claims epic efficiency from 87++ PSU

Enermax teased us at Computex with the prototype 87++ PSU. First up, a quick bit of background: the 87+ range of PSUs feature modular connectors and a power efficiency of 87-91%. Good going indeed.

The 87++, as one might naturally deduce, goes beyond that by providing 92% efficiency, Enermax claims, thus taking it to a level that far exceeds current PSU efficiency ratings. That's awfully efficient, so we must wonder what tricks they've used to produce a unit that can waste so little energy. We might in fact be left wondering forever, as we understand it's not yet decided whether the PSU will make it into production.

Still, here's a pic of the PSU, with one hell of a shiny gold fan - maybe that's the secret power-saving sauce?

I'm glad that Enermax finally fixed up their RMAs. Now with stuff like this I'm tempted to buy again.

Seasonic and Enermax have been fighting for the #1 efficiency spot for the last 2generations of PSUs,not much difference if one chooses one over the other

"Generally speaking, CMOS power consumption is the result of charging and discharging gate capacitors. The charge required to fully charge the gate grows with the voltage; charge times frequency is current. Voltage times current is power. So, as you raise the voltage, the current consumption grows linearly, and the power consumption quadratically, at a fixed frequency. Once you reach the frequency limit of the chip without raising the voltage, further frequency increases are normally proportional to voltage. In other words, once you have to start raising the voltage, power consumption tends to rise with the cube of frequency."

I thought one of the keys to high efficiency is simply to overspec your parts, so they're working within their optimal conditions. I assume the unit is capable of putting out more than they limit it to.

so it's like, either a 1200w PSU or more efficient 1000w PSU.

I would think a higher watt-rated PSU would sell for more, but with this gigantic efficiency maybe it could be sold for more.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I thought PSU's worked best / ran more efficient when you ran them at 75%... So I guess it depends on how much equipment your running....

    The Designs are changing.
Just look at the Seasonic x650 review at jonnyguru.com

He put such a low load on it (Dont remember/doesnt have access at work), it was still getting ~85% eff

but those are server power supply and already by demand of every customer to have a 90%+ efficiency, some have up to 94% efficiency if i remember weel but they are made by seasonic.

what reliability testing and voltage regulation quality tests have they done?
Fast computers breed slow, lazy programmers
The price of reliability is the pursuit of the utmost simplicity. It is a price which the very rich find most hard to pay.

I bought 5..... awesome psu's and really quiet

At 30% load the fan spins up from 0 to about 600 rpm for 30 secs and then shuts off again for 5 mins [rinse - repeat]...

Not anymore, some psus these days simply don't care if you load them barely at all or go to the limits and keep up well like for example the Seasonic X-650

Yeah, the Seasonic design is great and unless something better comes out my next choice for a new PSU. I'm not good with electronics but the design is definitely different.

How about a 1200W power supply that at 10% load gets Silver efficiency numbers, and is Gold cert'd from 20% load through 100% loads?

Oh, and has 1% voltage regulation on the +12V rail from no load to its full 100A load?
