Could be a typo, the same eVGA on North America website listed CUDA cores as 480:

Typo I would think, those part numbers match up with 480 core parts with the exception of the -AR/-ER which I'm assuming designates region.

    Yeah, typo...
What would be cool, though, is a possibility to unlock those 32sp on GTX480 via a BIOS or driver tweak.
    Now that'd be interesting.

Yeah probably someone from marketing keying in stuff, misquoting the specs..
Would be nice to unlock cores though, such as on AMD CPUs..

There's a possibility that will be possible. AFAIK nVidia's decision to use 480 CUDA cores instead of 512 was made last minute. That could mean they haven't had enough time to laser cut the 32 disabled CUDA cores. If it turns out to be possible, it's still going to be the question how many 480s are actually going to be able to run all 512 cores at decent clock speeds. Most of them have been disabled with a reason

Might be because NVIDIA changed it to 480 SPs at a last minute before launch, just before sending review samples to the review sites.

i dont think it was that soon.
i imagine as soon as they decided to change the name from gtx 380 to gtx 480 was about the time they decided to take it down from 512 to 480.

could be an april 1st joke by nv... holding the 512 until then. But really how are they going to keep that one thermally safe when the 480 is already as hot as it is?

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

AFAIK it was just about the time the reviewer's guide was completed.

In best case scenario, Nvidia might have GF100-512C GPUs ready for October/November, but I wouldn't count on it.

It is a typo.. I think. AFAIK 512 Core GF100 based cards are not due to arrive until Q3 2010 with September being pencilled in for 3GB and Quadro 6GB versions of the 512 core behemoth.
My guess is that the pipes are laser cut, so no amount of driving modding or BIOS hacking will unlock those pipes.

they could go just drop the 32 cores from the die which would improve yields

    GTX 470 @ 859MHz 1062mv
